No Man’s Sky update 5.10, Aquarius, added fishing to the long-running space exploration game on September 4, 2024. It is a free update for existing players, not a separate paid expansion. To start, unlock the Fishing Rig blueprint at the Space Anomaly, install the rig in your Multi-Tool, and cast into a body of water.
What Aquarius adds to No Man’s Sky
Aquarius makes fishing a new activity alongside the water changes introduced in Worlds Part I. Hello Games’ Aquarius 5.10 patch notes describe more than 160 varieties of fish, with catches shaped by the planet, time of day, weather and water depth. Finding new species is therefore tied to exploring different worlds and conditions, rather than simply casting in one convenient spot.
The update also adds seafood recipes, fishing records, automated gear and an offshore platform, so fishing can fit into different styles of play.
How to start fishing
- Visit the Space Anomaly and obtain the Fishing Rig blueprint.
- Install the Fishing Rig in your Multi-Tool.
- Find a body of water and cast your line. Fishing works in first- and third-person views; VR has distinct casting mechanics.
Players can use specialist bait to target particular fish, or use any edible item as bait. The update also added music for fishing. Hello Games’ notes describe VR casting but do not establish identical behavior across every headset or platform.

Choose how and where to fish

These are complementary choices within the update. Specialist bait offers a more targeted approach than general edible bait, while the Exo-Skiff changes where you can fish rather than replacing the Multi-Tool Fishing Rig.
What you can do with a catch
Fish can be cooked into new seafood recipes at the Nutrient Processor, sold, consumed or released. Fishing records—including catch history and weight records—appear in the Wonders catalogue, which also provides information about finding species. Not every cast yields an ordinary fish: occasional catches include messages in bottles and water-damaged technology upgrades.

Aquarius Expedition rewards and availability
Expedition Fifteen, Aquarius, launched alongside update 5.10 on September 4, 2024, and was announced as a roughly six-week event. Its rewards included posters, decals and titles, deep-sea diving-suit customization, the Lost Angler’s Rig and the Aquarius Flightpack. Hello Games later ran the expedition as a Redux from January 8 through January 22, 2025, as recorded in its Redux announcement. Those dates confirm a past replay, not current access to the expedition or its rewards.

Hello Games’ release log lists Aquarius with PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and Xbox Game Pass in its update listing; Xbox Wire also identifies availability on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Game Pass. Consult the official release log for current platform information rather than treating a historical update listing as a guarantee of present compatibility.

Hello Games’ September 17, 2024 Aquarius 5.12 notes document early fixes, including one for fishing interruptions and changes to the Exo-Skiff. They describe that patch’s changes, not the game’s current bug status.
