“The program can’t start because nsi.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” You may also see “nsi.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” or “nsi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
nsi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, commonly described as the NSI User-mode interface DLL. It belongs to the Windows Network Store Interface component, so the safest repair is to restore Windows itself rather than download a loose copy.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you are seeing:
- Several programs fail, or Windows networking is also broken: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- Windows Security recently detected or removed the file: inspect Protection History before changing anything.
- Only one game or application fails: verify or repair that application after checking Windows system files.
- The file exists but will not load: the file may be corrupt, the wrong architecture, inaccessible, or dependent on another missing component.
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or network status is failing without a DLL dialog: investigate the Network Store Interface service and network drivers.
- The problem began after a Windows update, cleanup utility, malware incident, or disk problem: use System Restore or broader Windows recovery after checking system integrity.
Do not begin by searching for a replacement nsi.dll on a DLL download site. Those files can be modified, unsigned, intended for another Windows build, or compiled for the wrong CPU architecture.
What nsi.dll does and where it belongs
Windows uses nsi.dll as part of its Network Store Interface networking layer. The related Network Store Interface Service, named nsi, provides network notifications to user-mode clients. Microsoft describes it as an always-installed Windows service, and disabling it can remove network connectivity.

On 64-bit Windows, the native system copy normally resides at:
%windir%System32nsi.dll
Windows also supports 32-bit applications through WOW64 redirection. The architecture-appropriate 32-bit system files are normally associated with:
%windir%SysWOW64nsi.dll
Do not assume that copying a file from System32 to SysWOW64, or the reverse, is a repair. System32 is the native 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows, despite its name. The exact version and size vary with the Windows edition, build, architecture, and servicing level.
A file can appear to be present and still fail to load. It may be damaged, inaccessible, the wrong architecture, or unable to resolve another dependency. The filename alone also cannot prove that nsi.dll is the real cause; the program may be reporting a different DLL loaded during the same startup sequence.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Microsoft’s first-line repair path is to bring Windows current before repairing its component store.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Select Download & install if updates are offered.
- Restart Windows, even if the update page does not insist on it.
- Launch the affected program again.
If the error started immediately after an update, do not assume the update itself deleted nsi.dll. A pending restart, component-store inconsistency, or damaged system file can produce the same symptom.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than reinstalling random runtimes.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected system files. Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or found files it could not repair. A successful repair means the protected Windows copy was restored or verified. It does not necessarily prove that the application itself is healthy.
If DISM fails, install pending Windows updates and restart, then run the command again. When DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. Use a source that matches your Windows installation rather than selecting an arbitrary image.
Repeating SFC without recording its result makes troubleshooting guesswork. Note the exact DISM and SFC messages before moving to the next step.
If you want help identifying what changed while you work through DISM and SFC, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the appropriate fix for a genuine protected-file problem.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged-looking system file. Check the record before manually replacing anything.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a recent detection involving
nsi.dllor a Windows system-file location. - Expand the detection and review its path, detection name, and action.
- If the file is clearly the genuine Microsoft copy and the system is otherwise clean, use Restore.
- Update Windows Security and run a Full scan.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is nsi.dll. A file in a game folder, temporary directory, or unusual user-writable location deserves closer scrutiny. If you are uncertain, leave the detection in quarantine and let SFC restore the Windows copy instead.
If the detection returns after restoration, investigate malware or an unauthorized system modification rather than repeatedly restoring the same file.

Fix 4: Repair the affected game or application
If only one program reports the error and Windows behaves normally, the application installation or its startup environment may be damaged. The program normally consumes the Windows-provided DLL; it does not necessarily own it.
Open the launcher or application settings and look for one of these commands:
- Verify
- Verify integrity of files
- Repair
- Scan and repair
Allow the operation to finish, restart Windows, and launch the program again. If no repair function exists:
- Back up game saves and configuration files if they are stored outside cloud synchronization.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or launcher.
- Apply the program’s updates before testing.
Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because the message names nsi.dll. Those runtimes do not normally supply this Windows system DLL. Install a runtime only when the error also names a separate runtime file or the application’s official requirements identify it.
If the program’s launcher reports a different missing DLL after repair, troubleshoot that dependency separately. A launcher can expose the first missing module it encounters rather than the true underlying fault.

Fix 5: Use System Restore if the failure has a clear starting point
System Restore is useful when nsi.dll worked before a driver installation, cleanup operation, update, or system modification.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
- Pick a restore point from before the first failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review which applications and drivers may be changed.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a personal backup. If it does not resolve the error, return to DISM and SFC results rather than trying several unrelated DLL copies.

Fix 6: Separate a DLL error from a network-service problem
A missing-file dialog and a networking outage are not automatically the same problem.
If the symptom is that Wi-Fi, Ethernet, network discovery, or Windows network status fails:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Press Win + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Network Store Interface Service.
- Open its properties and check its current status and startup configuration.
- Do not disable the service as a troubleshooting shortcut.
- Restart Windows and test the connection.
A network failure may instead involve Winsock, a network adapter driver, router connectivity, or another Windows networking component. Replacing nsi.dll will not repair those causes.
To inspect the adapter:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Check Properties > General for a device error.
- Use Update driver or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If you are manually checking numerous adapter models and driver releases, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation through the full version handles the update. It is optional, and it cannot replace Windows system-file repair or fix a defective adapter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 nsi.dll is normally wrong
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Microsoft does not instruct users to register nsi.dll, and there is no reason to assume it is a self-registering component. Running:
Recommended Free Tools
regsvr32 nsi.dll
can produce another error without repairing the file. Use DISM and SFC for Windows component repair instead.
Why loose DLL downloads are unsafe
A random replacement can have the wrong:
- Windows build
- CPU architecture
- servicing level
- file signature
- dependency set
It may also be modified or malicious. Even a genuine copy can leave the component store, permissions, registry state, or related files damaged. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, a verified Windows installation source, System Restore, or the official installer for the affected application.

Prevention and escalation checklist
Keep Windows and your security software updated, avoid system “cleaner” utilities that remove unknown Windows files, and investigate repeated disk or malware warnings. Do not disable the Network Store Interface Service to work around a startup error.
If the error continues, record:
- The exact message and error code
- The program that displays it
- Whether other programs fail
- The full path shown for
nsi.dll - Your Windows edition, version, build, and architecture
- The final DISM result
- The final SFC result
- Any Windows Security quarantine action
- Whether the failure began after an update or driver change
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, back up personal data and consider System Restore, an in-place Windows repair installation, or Windows recovery options. The filename is only the starting clue; the repair path depends on whether the damaged item is Windows, the application, security software, or the networking stack.
FAQ
Is nsi.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. nsi.dll is a genuine Windows system DLL associated with the Network Store Interface component. It is not normally supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a particular game.
Should I download the latest nsi.dll?
No. There is no single universal version or size for every Windows installation, and Microsoft does not provide an official consumer nsi.dll download package. Restore it through Windows repair.
Why does the file appear in System32 on 64-bit Windows?
System32 is the native system directory on 64-bit Windows. 32-bit applications use WOW64 redirection and the architecture-appropriate files associated with SysWOW64.
Does sfc /scannow repair nsi.dll?
It can repair a missing or corrupted protected Windows file when the component store is healthy. Run DISM first, then SFC.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Can I register nsi.dll with regsvr32?
Normally no. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs, and Microsoft provides no instruction to register this Windows component.
What if only one game fails?
Verify or repair the game, then reinstall it from its official launcher if necessary. Also confirm that the error actually names nsi.dll, because the launcher may be reporting another missing dependency.
What if Windows networking fails too?
Check the Network Store Interface Service, network adapter status, and official driver updates. Network symptoms can come from the service, Winsock, drivers, or other components rather than from nsi.dll itself.
