ntprint.dll is missing from your computer, was not found, or could not be loaded. You may also see: “ntprint.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
This file is the Windows Spooler Setup DLL, a Microsoft component used by the default printer class installer. It reads printer INF information and participates in installing printer drivers. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game-runtime file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description closest to what you are seeing:
- The message appears when Windows starts, opens Add printer, or launches
printui.exe: repair Windows components first, then repair the printer driver. - The error appears while installing one printer: suspect an incompatible, damaged, or leftover vendor driver before assuming that
ntprint.dllitself is corrupt. - Every printer fails, Print Spooler stops, or print jobs remain stuck: reset the spooler and remove obsolete printer packages.
- The problem began after Windows Update: install pending updates, then consider Windows’ repair reinstall option.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history and verify the file before restoring anything.
- DISM and SFC report no problems: stop replacing the DLL and inspect printer setup logs, driver packages, and dependencies.
- The error began after a recent driver or software change: use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists.
- A game or unrelated application reports the file: investigate that application’s installer and Windows printing components. Do not assume the application needs a third-party copy of
ntprint.dll.
The safest first repair is to run DISM and SFC in that order from an elevated Command Prompt.

What ntprint.dll does
Microsoft documents Ntprint.dll as the default Windows printer class installer. During printer setup, Windows uses it to process printer INF entries and help install the printer-driver package. Microsoft also documents the related Windows printer information file as %WINDIR%infNtprint.inf.
That means an error mentioning ntprint.dll often belongs to the printing subsystem rather than to the program that displayed the message. A printer installer may load the Windows class installer successfully and then fail later while installing a vendor driver, catalog, INF, or dependency.
Windows setup logs can therefore mention ntprint.dll even when the vendor’s printer package is the part that failed. A reference to the file is evidence about where setup was working, not conclusive proof that the file is defective.
Where the file should be
On a typical installation, the protected Windows component is under:
Recommended Free Tools
%WINDIR%System32
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit counterpart may also be present under:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
The exact path, build, architecture, and presence of a particular copy depend on your Windows edition, servicing state, and installed components. On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
Do not choose a replacement because a file database lists a newer-looking version. Windows components must match the operating system’s build, architecture, servicing state, and signature.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
A missing or damaged protected Windows file is the first condition to rule out. DISM repairs the Windows component source, and System File Checker then scans protected files and replaces corrupted copies when a valid repair source is available.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait until the operation completes. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
When DISM finishes, leave the elevated Command Prompt open and run SFC:
sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
Interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with the printer-driver and spooler fixes below.
- SFC repaired corrupted files: restart and test the printer or installer again.
- SFC found corrupted files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result does not change, use a matching Windows repair source or move to the recovery options later in this guide.
- DISM cannot find source files: Windows may need access to Windows Update or matching installation media. Do not substitute an arbitrary DLL from another computer.
If Windows Update is unavailable, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source with DISM’s /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must correspond to the installed Windows version and edition.

Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to determine which component changed when several repairs are attempted. Outbyte PC Repair scans for the reported problems and shows what needs attention; its repair function is performed by the full version, while DISM and SFC remain the official Windows repair path.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFix 2: Remove and reinstall the printer driver
If ntprint.dll fails while adding one particular printer, the vendor driver is often a stronger suspect than the Windows class installer. Old packages, duplicate packages, incompatible architecture, and a damaged INF installation can all cause setup to fail.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
Restart Windows before reinstalling if the printer was installed repeatedly or the Print Spooler has been crashing.
Remove an obsolete driver package
Some old packages remain after the printer itself is removed.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- In the Print Server Properties window, select the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete or duplicate printer driver.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows.
Only remove packages you recognize. If the package is currently used by another printer, removing it can affect that device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can also inspect printer entries in Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, where present, Universal Serial Bus controllers or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the affected printer or old entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver package only if you are certain it belongs to the obsolete device.
- Restart Windows.
Download the replacement driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Match the driver to your Windows version and CPU architecture. Avoid installing a package intended for a different printer model merely because its name looks similar.
Manually comparing several vendor packages can be tedious, especially when Device Manager lists multiple stale drivers. Outbyte Driver Updater scans for outdated driver entries and identifies what needs updating; the full version performs the driver installation, while the printer manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source for a model-specific reinstall.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair is likely successful when:
- Add printer opens without the
ntprint.dllmessage. - The printer installs without error
0x000000c1. - The printer appears under Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- Other applications can print without the Print Spooler stopping.
If only one printer still fails while another prints normally, continue investigating that printer’s driver and connection rather than replacing Windows files again.
Fix 3: Reset the Print Spooler and its queue
A damaged queue or stuck spooler can make printer setup and printing appear to be DLL failures.
Reset the spooler through Services
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS
- Approve administrator access if prompted.
- Delete the files inside the PRINTERS folder, but do not delete the folder itself.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Start.
Try printing again. If the spooler stops immediately after starting, remove the affected printer and obsolete driver packages before reinstalling.
Do not delete arbitrary files from System32. The queue folder is a specific spooler location; it is not a reason to remove Windows DLLs.
Fix 4: Install Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components in an inconsistent state.

- Check again for updates after the restart.
After updating, run DISM and SFC again if the ntprint.dll message remains. Then test Add printer and the Print Spooler.
Repair Windows through Windows Update
On supported Windows 11 systems, Windows may offer a repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Keep the computer connected to power and back up important files before starting. If the option is not present, use Windows installation media or another recovery method instead.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
If antivirus software removed ntprint.dll, Windows may show a missing-file or bad-image message even though the original cause was a detection event.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
ntprint.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not disable antivirus protection or restore the file automatically. Restore a quarantined file only after confirming that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed Windows component and that the detection is a false positive. If the detection appears credible or the file was modified, leave it quarantined.
Run a Full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan and then repair Windows with DISM, SFC, or trusted installation media. A clean file copied from another computer is not a substitute for removing malware or repairing the component store.
Fix 6: Check the exact failure in setup logs
If the file exists but Windows still reports that it cannot load it, the missing item may be a dependency or a printer installation component.
Review the printer setup log
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter:
C:WindowsINFsetupapi.dev.log
- Search for:
ntprint.dll- the printer model
failederror- the relevant INF filename
Look at the lines immediately after the ntprint.dll entry. If the log shows a vendor INF, catalog, driver package, or device installation failure, repair that package rather than replacing the Windows class installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can also open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System around the time of the failure.
- Look for Print Spooler, application, service, or driver errors.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found ntprint.dll but failed to load a dependency, access a required component, or initialize a damaged driver package.
What the common messages mean
“The program can’t start because ntprint.dll is missing from your computer”
This is a generic Windows loader message. It can indicate a missing or damaged Windows component, but it can also appear when an application or printer installer calls the printing subsystem incorrectly.
Run DISM and SFC first. If the message appears only for one printer or application, repair that printer package or application as well.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Error loading ntprint.dll”
This generally means Windows could not initialize the component. The cause may be corruption, an architecture mismatch, a damaged driver package, or another failed print component.
“ntprint.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This is a bad-image style message. A documented Microsoft case also involved printui.exe and error 0x000000c1. Repair Windows components, update Windows, and remove incompatible printer drivers instead of downloading a replacement file.
“Windows can’t open Add Printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000000c1)”
This points toward a print-subsystem, class-installer, or printer-driver failure. Run DISM and SFC, reset the spooler, remove old printer packages, and install a matching current driver.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why you should not download ntprint.dll
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer, a Windows.old folder, or an unrelated Windows installation.
That approach can introduce:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature.
- Malware or tampering.
- A version mismatch with the component store.
- The same underlying printer-driver failure after the copy.
Microsoft does not provide a standalone ntprint.dll redistributable. Supported repair sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery, and matching Windows installation media.
Copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory is not a valid architecture repair. Likewise, putting a 32-bit file into System32 does not make it suitable for 64-bit Windows. Let Windows restore protected components through its servicing system.
Does regsvr32 fix ntprint.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command for every DLL in Windows. Running it against an ordinary Windows component may produce a registration error and does not restore a missing protected file, repair the component store, or fix a printer INF.
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and printer-driver repair instead. Do not add regsvr32 to startup, registry, or printer troubleshooting instructions unless Microsoft documentation for the specific component explicitly requires it.

Use System Restore
Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver, application, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Select a point from before the printing problem began.
- Click Next, review the affected programs and drivers, and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore does not remove personal files, but it can roll back recently installed programs, drivers, and system settings.

Use matching installation media
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. Microsoft’s repair instructions describe supplying a matching source to DISM. Back up important files first and do not use media from an unrelated Windows release.
Perform an in-place repair
An in-place Windows repair using compatible installation media can replace damaged Windows components while preserving personal files and, when the correct options are selected, installed applications. Follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance carefully and verify that the media matches the installed edition.
Consider a clean installation only last
A clean reinstall is justified when Windows remains broadly corrupted, trusted repair sources fail, malware cannot be removed reliably, or the system has problems beyond printing. Back up personal files, export anything important, and confirm that you have installation and driver access before erasing the existing installation.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep Windows updated.
- Use the printer manufacturer’s driver for the exact model and Windows architecture.
- Remove obsolete duplicate printer packages after replacing hardware.
- Avoid unofficial DLL downloads and “DLL fixer” utilities.
- Keep antivirus protection enabled.
- Do not interrupt Windows servicing or updates.
- Record the exact printer model and error code before making several changes.
- Test a printer after each major repair so you know which step changed the result.
FAQ
Is ntprint.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with printer class installation and the Print Spooler setup process.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified Microsoft documentation identifies it as a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game-runtime component. Its documented role is Windows printer installation.
Should I copy it into an application folder?
No. Copying the file can create a version or architecture mismatch and does not repair Windows or the printer driver that requested it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the file exist but still fail?
The failure may involve a dependency, printer INF, driver package, catalog signature, registry class entry, or another module. Check DISM and SFC results, then inspect setupapi.dev.log and Event Viewer.
What if only one printer triggers the error?
Remove that printer and its obsolete driver package, restart the Print Spooler, and install the correct manufacturer driver. If other printers work, the Windows component is less likely to be the primary cause.
What if every printer fails?
Run DISM and SFC, reset the Print Spooler, install pending Windows updates, and inspect Windows repair results. Escalate to System Restore, a repair reinstall, or matching installation media if corruption persists.
Should I restore a quarantined copy?
Only after confirming that the file is genuine, Microsoft-signed, and incorrectly detected. Otherwise, keep it quarantined, scan the system, and repair Windows from trusted sources.
What information should I collect before asking for help?
Record the exact error text, Windows version and architecture, printer model, whether Add printer or printui.exe fails, whether all printers are affected, and whether the problem began after an update, driver installation, or security detection.
