Yes—DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution is available to existing GeForce RTX graphics cards, including RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series models. But Nvidia’s headline features are split: the image-quality upgrade is broadly compatible, while Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X Multi Frame Generation require an RTX 50 Series GPU.
That also means DLSS 4.5 does not guarantee higher FPS on every card. RTX 20 and 30 Series owners may see better image quality but lower performance with Nvidia’s newer Models M and L, making the older Model K a potentially better choice.
What DLSS 4.5 actually includes
DLSS 4.5 is not one feature that works identically on every Nvidia GPU. It combines separate technologies with different hardware requirements.
DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution
This is the part most existing RTX owners can use. Super Resolution renders a game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output using motion data, previous-frame information, and an updated AI model.

Nvidia says its second-generation transformer model uses five times the compute of the original transformer model and was trained on a larger, higher-fidelity dataset. The company says it improves temporal stability, motion clarity, edge quality, anti-aliasing, lighting detail, and ghosting—particularly in aggressive Performance and Ultra Performance modes. Nvidia’s technical explanation also attributes lighting improvements to training and inference in linear space rather than earlier logarithmic-space approaches.
In practical terms, the intended improvements include fewer ghost trails behind moving objects, less shimmer in foliage and fine geometry, cleaner edges during camera movement, and more stable reflections and lighting.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is an RTX 50 Series feature. Rather than using one fixed frame-generation multiplier, it adjusts the number of generated frames according to the gap between the game’s rendered performance and the display’s target refresh rate.

The aim is to avoid generating unnecessary frames when the game is already close to the monitor’s target while increasing the multiplier in more demanding scenes. It is not available on RTX 20, 30, or 40 Series cards.
6X Multi Frame Generation
6X Multi Frame Generation can generate up to five AI frames for every traditionally rendered frame. The “6X” label describes the maximum theoretical frame-generation multiplier—not a guarantee that every game will deliver six times its native-rendered FPS.
Nvidia says the feature is powered by RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. Its published claim of up to a 35% increase compares 4K path-traced gaming on RTX 50 hardware using 6X mode with the previous 4X mode; it is not a general DLSS 4.5 performance guarantee. Nvidia’s DLSS documentation lists the hardware context.
Compatibility by RTX generation
| GPU | DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution | Dynamic/6X Multi Frame Generation | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 20 Series | Yes, through supported NVIDIA App overrides | No | Models M and L can cost more performance because the GPU lacks native FP8 support |
| RTX 30 Series | Yes, through supported NVIDIA App overrides | No | Same FP8-related performance caveat as RTX 20 |
| RTX 40 Series | Yes | No 6X Multi Frame Generation | The newer Super Resolution model is supported, but RTX 50-only MFG features are not |
| RTX 50 Series | Yes | Yes, in compatible games | Supports Dynamic and 6X Multi Frame Generation with compatible software and drivers |
The compatibility applies to GeForce RTX hardware. Installing the NVIDIA App does not give GTX cards or non-Nvidia graphics cards access to DLSS 4.5.
Nvidia says more than 400 games and apps can receive the DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution upgrade through overrides. That figure does not mean every title supports every DLSS 4.5 feature. Native game integration, Super Resolution overrides, Frame Generation overrides, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA support are separate matters.
Will DLSS 4.5 increase your FPS?
Super Resolution can increase performance—but the model has a cost
Super Resolution can improve performance because the game renders fewer internal pixels before reconstructing the final image. The result is most useful when the GPU is the limiting factor, especially at 1440p or 4K with ray tracing or path tracing enabled.
However, the reconstruction model itself consumes GPU resources. Nvidia says RTX 40 and 50 GPUs benefit from native FP8 support, which keeps the performance trade-off of the second-generation transformer relatively small. RTX 20 and 30 GPUs lack native FP8 support, so Models M and L can impose a much heavier cost.

For that reason, the new model may improve image quality without increasing FPS on an older card—or may reduce FPS. Nvidia specifically says RTX 20 and 30 owners may prefer Model K, the earlier DLSS 4 model, for a better quality-to-performance balance. Compare average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, and image quality in motion rather than assuming the newest model is automatically fastest.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

It is important to separate three numbers:
- Rendered FPS: frames produced by the game engine.
- Displayed or presented FPS: traditionally rendered frames plus AI-generated frames.
- Latency: how quickly your input is reflected on screen.
Multi Frame Generation can make motion appear substantially smoother, particularly in GPU-limited ray-traced or path-traced games. But generated frames do not replace the need for a healthy base frame rate, and a high displayed FPS number does not provide the same responsiveness as the same number of natively rendered frames.
Nvidia positions Reflex as part of the frame-generation feature set. Enable Reflex where the game supports it, but still judge responsiveness through frame pacing and input feel—not only the FPS counter.
DLSS 4.5 model presets explained
In Nvidia’s current Recommended override, the model mapping is:
- Model M: DLSS Performance mode.
- Model L: DLSS Ultra Performance mode.
- Model K: the remaining Super Resolution modes.
Models M and L can also be selected for Quality, Balanced, and DLAA modes, but Nvidia says their largest quality and performance advantages are expected in Performance and Ultra Performance modes.

“Recommended” is not universally best. On RTX 20 and 30 Series cards, start with Model K if Model M or L lowers your frame rate too much. The correct choice is the one that gives you the best combination of image quality, frame-time consistency, and responsiveness in your game.
How to enable DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution
- Install or update the NVIDIA App.
- Install a compatible Game Ready driver.
- Close the game.
- Open the NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
- Open Program Settings and select the game. Use global settings only when appropriate.
- Find DLSS Override – Model Presets or the similarly named model-preset option.
- Select Recommended.
- Apply the setting and relaunch the game.
Nvidia has used both “DLSS Override – Model Presets” and “DLSS Override – Model Preset” in its documentation, so the wording may differ between NVIDIA App releases.
DLSS Super Resolution must also be enabled in the game. The override does not add DLSS to a title that has no compatible DLSS implementation or is not on Nvidia’s supported list.
How to check which model is active
Use the NVIDIA App overlay by pressing Alt+Z, opening Statistics, selecting Statistics View, and inspecting the DLSS information.
How to undo the override
Return the relevant NVIDIA App setting to Use the 3D application setting, or the equivalent option that restores the game’s native setting. Then relaunch the game and compare it with the override disabled. Nvidia documents this rollback path in its DLSS override support guidance.

How RTX 50 owners enable 6X Multi Frame Generation
Nvidia’s March 31, 2026 instructions specify the following path for fixed Multi Frame Generation:
- In the NVIDIA App, open Settings > About and opt in to the beta update if that option is required by your installed release.
- Install GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer, as specified in Nvidia’s support instructions.
- Open Graphics and select Program Settings for one game, or Global Settings for compatible titles.
- Choose DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode.
- Select Fixed.
- Choose the supported multiplier offered for the game.
- Confirm that Frame Generation is enabled in the game and restart it.
The exact NVIDIA App availability and labels can change with later releases. If 6X is missing, check the GPU generation, supported-title list, App version, driver version, in-game Frame Generation setting, and whether the game was restarted after applying the override.
Choose Dynamic mode when you want the multiplier to adapt toward a high-refresh display target. Choose Fixed mode when you want predictable behavior or are troubleshooting artifacts and frame pacing.
Which settings make sense for different players?
RTX 20 or 30 at 1440p
Start with Quality or Balanced and compare Model K against the Recommended setting. At 1440p, lower internal resolutions can make reconstruction artifacts more visible, and older cards are more likely to pay a noticeable cost for Models M and L.
RTX 20 or 30 at 4K
Super Resolution can still be valuable because 4K places a heavier load on the GPU. Test Performance mode if Quality or Balanced cannot meet your target, but pay close attention to ghosting, foliage, thin geometry, and 1% lows. Model K may remain the better choice if the newer model costs too much performance.
RTX 40 at 4K with ray tracing
The newer Super Resolution model is more attractive on RTX 40 because Nvidia says native FP8 support reduces its performance penalty. Start with Quality, then move to Balanced or Performance if ray tracing prevents you from reaching your display target.
RTX 50 with a 240Hz display
Dynamic or fixed Multi Frame Generation is most relevant when you have a compatible game, a high-refresh display, and enough traditionally rendered performance to provide a stable base. Use Reflex where available and evaluate latency and frame pacing as well as the displayed FPS.

Competitive games
Prioritize responsiveness and visual clarity over the largest possible FPS number. Test rapid camera movements, thin lines, character motion, HUD elements, and mouse feel. If generated frames make controls feel less immediate or introduce distracting artifacts, keep Super Resolution and disable Frame Generation, or return to the native setting.
Single-player ray-traced or path-traced games
This is the strongest use case for DLSS 4.5’s full feature set. The visual gains from temporal reconstruction and the smoother presentation from RTX 50 Multi Frame Generation can be useful when native rendering is especially expensive. Even here, compare scenes in motion rather than relying on a static screenshot.

The new model reduces FPS
This is especially plausible on RTX 20 and 30 Series cards. Compare Model K with Models M and L, then keep the option that offers the better balance of quality and performance. Do not judge only by average FPS; check 1% lows and frame-time consistency too.
The override appears to do nothing
Confirm that the game is supported, DLSS Super Resolution is enabled in-game, the title was closed before applying the override, and the NVIDIA App and driver are current enough for the feature. A native game implementation may also take precedence, and a global setting may not apply to the executable you intended.
The menu label is different
Look under Graphics > Program Settings for an option containing DLSS Override and Model Preset. Nvidia has used slightly different singular and plural labels across its documentation and App releases.
6X mode is unavailable
Check that the card is an RTX 50 Series model, the game supports the feature, the required NVIDIA App beta option is enabled, the driver is 595.97 WHQL or newer according to Nvidia’s March 31 instructions, and in-game Frame Generation is enabled. Restart the title after changing the setting.
The image has artifacts or responsiveness feels worse
Test fast motion, foliage, reflections, particles, hair, HUD elements, and rapid character movement. If the result is unstable, return to the native game setting, use a lower fixed multiplier, or disable Frame Generation while retaining Super Resolution.
Is DLSS 4.5 worth enabling?
For most RTX owners, DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution is worth testing because it is a software-delivered option and can improve image quality in supported games. It is particularly compelling at 4K, with ray tracing, or when a game’s native temporal reconstruction produces visible shimmer and ghosting.
It is not an automatic win on RTX 20 and 30 Series cards. Models M and L can cost enough performance that Model K is preferable. At 1080p or in CPU-limited games, the benefit may also be small because reducing the GPU’s internal workload does not solve a processor bottleneck.
RTX 50 owners are the only target audience for Dynamic and 6X Multi Frame Generation. Those features can make sense with demanding ray-traced games and high-refresh monitors, but generated FPS should not be treated as equivalent to native-rendered performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuying a new GPU is therefore not necessary merely to use DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution.
