Nvidia has not disabled older GeForce graphics cards. Instead, Maxwell, Pascal and Volta GeForce GPUs moved out of regular Game Ready driver support in October 2025. Nvidia says these cards will receive critical-security driver updates through October 2028, but not the normal stream of new-game optimisations, new features and routine game-specific fixes.
This is separate from Nvidia’s Windows 10 driver timetable. Full GeForce Game Ready and Studio support for Windows 10 is planned through October 2026, with the first Game Ready driver that does not support Windows 10 expected in November 2026.
Which GeForce cards are affected?
The affected products are defined by GPU architecture, not simply by whether a card carries a “GTX” label. Nvidia’s complete model list includes the following desktop, notebook and TITAN products.

Notebook, OEM and desktop versions with similar names can use different device IDs or driver packages. Check the exact model rather than selecting a similar-looking product from Nvidia’s download page.

What support has ended?
Nvidia’s support plan, updated on July 31, 2025, moved Maxwell, Pascal and Volta GeForce products to security-only driver support beginning in October 2025. Nvidia says the transition followed approximately 11 years of Game Ready support for Maxwell and approximately nine years for Pascal and Volta.
Regular Game Ready support normally includes:
- Optimisation for newly released games;
- performance improvements;
- new driver and graphics features;
- launch-day compatibility work; and
- routine fixes for newly discovered game and application problems.
Those cards are no longer part of that normal development stream. Nvidia says Turing, Ampere, Ada and Blackwell GPUs continue to receive Game Ready updates under this architecture plan.
Security updates are different
Security-only support is not the same as complete driver abandonment. Nvidia’s published plan provides critical-security driver updates for Maxwell, Pascal and Volta from October 2025 through October 2028. That does not guarantee a fix for every game bug, performance problem or new graphics feature.

Existing compatible drivers also do not disappear when the support category changes. A currently installed driver can continue to run the desktop, games and applications it already supports. Over time, however, a new game may require an optimisation, API behaviour, feature or bug fix that the older driver branch will not receive.
What this means for GTX 1060 and GTX 1080 owners
A GTX 1060 or GTX 1080 should continue to display Windows, launch compatible games and operate with its existing driver. The support change does not create an immediate hardware lockout.
The practical risk is gradual rather than instant:
- A new release may run without launch-day optimisation.
- A game-specific driver bug may remain unresolved.
- New rendering features may require newer hardware.
- VRAM limits can cause stutter or texture problems independently of driver support.
- Game-engine, anti-cheat, graphics-API or operating-system changes can create compatibility problems.
There is no reliable date on which every affected card will stop running games. One title may remain playable for years while another may expose the limits of the GPU, its VRAM or its driver branch sooner.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but Nvidia says it will continue full GeForce Game Ready and Studio driver support for the operating system through October 2026. These are Nvidia’s stated plans, so check future driver release notes as the dates approach.
How to check whether your GPU is affected
Use Device Manager
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the exact Nvidia model name.
Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - Open the Display or Render tab.
- Check the GPU name and driver details.
The Nvidia App and Nvidia Control Panel can also show the installed GPU, although menu labels may vary by software version. For a driver download, use Nvidia’s official driver-selection page and enter the exact model, operating system and notebook or desktop designation.
Do not choose a desktop GTX 1060 driver simply because a laptop is described as having a “GTX 1060.” Mobile and OEM implementations can require different packages.
Should you keep the card, update the driver or upgrade?
Keep the card when it still meets your needs
Keeping an affected GPU is reasonable if your current games run acceptably, you mostly play older or lightweight titles, or the computer is used for office work, video playback and occasional gaming. There is no technical requirement to replace the card merely because Nvidia changed its support category.

Consider upgrading when new releases are the priority
An upgrade makes more sense when you regularly buy new AAA games, encounter recurring driver-related problems, need modern ray tracing, upscaling or frame-generation features, or are already limited by VRAM. A newer GPU also gives you a longer period of full driver support.
Do not assume the GPU is the only bottleneck. Before buying, check CPU performance, system memory, storage, airflow, power-supply capacity and case clearance. A laptop GPU may be soldered and effectively impossible to replace economically.
Windows 10 users have a separate choice
Moving to Windows 11 does not restore Game Ready support to a Maxwell, Pascal or Volta GPU that has already entered security-only status. It can, however, address the separate Windows 10 driver timeline if the PC meets Windows 11 requirements. If the computer remains on Windows 10, Nvidia’s published plan provides full GeForce Game Ready and Studio support through October 2026 and critical-security updates through October 2029.

- Identify the exact GPU. If it is not on Nvidia’s Maxwell, Pascal or Volta list, this particular architecture announcement does not apply to it.
- Check the operating system. Windows 10 has its own driver-support deadline, regardless of GPU generation.
- Test the games you actually play. A working current game is more useful evidence than a headline about support status.
- Separate symptoms. Driver errors, low VRAM, overheating, a weak CPU and insufficient RAM require different solutions.
- Choose the least expensive adequate fix. Keep the card if it works, try a known-stable compatible driver when a particular game regresses, or upgrade only when your software and feature requirements justify it.
If you roll back a driver, download the fallback package first and create a restore point where practical. A rollback can solve a game regression but may remove a security fix or reduce compatibility with another application. Driver-cleanup utilities can help with difficult installations, but unnecessary cleanup can make recovery more complicated.

If you decide to replace the card, compare the whole system rather than buying solely by series number. Nvidia’s RTX 50-series and RTX 40-series offer newer Nvidia architectures and continued Game Ready support under Nvidia’s current plan. AMD’s Radeon range and Intel’s Arc range are alternatives when price or conventional rasterised gaming matters more than Nvidia-specific features.
Suitability depends on the model’s current price, VRAM, power draw, PSU requirement, physical size, warranty, target resolution and refresh rate, CPU balance and the games you play. Avoid replacing one old GTX card with another merely because it is cheap: it may already be in the same support transition.

The timeline at a glance
- July 31, 2025: Nvidia updated its support plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my GTX 1060 or GTX 1080 stop working?
No. The card is not being disabled. It should continue running Windows and compatible games, although future games may lack optimisation, fixes or required features.
Will affected cards still receive security updates?
Nvidia says critical-security driver updates are planned for Maxwell, Pascal and Volta through October 2028.
Can I use Windows 11 with an affected GPU?
Possibly, if the PC meets Windows 11 requirements and the exact GPU and system have compatible drivers. Windows 11 does not restore Game Ready support to an architecture already moved to security-only status.
Are RTX cards covered by this Maxwell, Pascal and Volta announcement?
The announcement concerns Maxwell, Pascal and Volta GeForce products. RTX cards based on newer architectures are not affected by this specific architecture transition, although Windows 10 has a separate support timetable.
What if a future game refuses to launch?
Check the game’s minimum requirements, graphics API, VRAM needs, anti-cheat requirements, operating-system support and available driver notes. The cause may be the game or OS rather than the GPU driver alone; a stable driver rollback may help in some cases.
