If NVIDIA Freestyle filters stopped working in ARC Raiders, first check whether they work in another supported game. If they do, your GPU and NVIDIA setup are probably fine: current player reports indicate ARC Raiders filters may be unavailable or restricted in some builds, and there may be no local setting that restores them. If the filters fail everywhere, troubleshoot the NVIDIA App and overlay before reinstalling drivers.
Quick diagnosis
- Open ARC Raiders and press Alt+Z. If the NVIDIA overlay opens, the basic overlay is running.
- Look for Game Filter, then try Alt+F3. Note whether the panel is missing, empty, ineffective, or shows “A supported game is required.”
- Test Freestyle in another game you know supports it.
If filters fail in every game, work through the NVIDIA troubleshooting below. If they work elsewhere but not in ARC Raiders, the issue is more likely game compatibility or a game-side restriction than a broken driver. NVIDIA says Freestyle supports more than 1,200 games, but that broad figure does not establish support for every title or build (NVIDIA App).

Why NVIDIA filters may not work in ARC Raiders
Players reported in January 2026 that ARC Raiders filters had stopped working. Community discussion and third-party coverage have attributed this to filters being restricted because they can make dark areas easier to see. That is a reported explanation, not a confirmed official statement: the available NVIDIA and Embark material does not clearly establish the cause, whether the restriction is permanent, or which builds it affects (Steam discussion; January 2026 report).

Enable Game Filters in the NVIDIA App
Game Filters can be disabled by default in the NVIDIA App. Check the setting before changing drivers:
- Open NVIDIA App and go to Settings.
- Select Features, then Overlay.
- Enable Game Filters and Photo Mode.
- Restart the NVIDIA App, fully close ARC Raiders, then relaunch the game.
- Test Alt+Z, then Alt+F3.
NVIDIA documents this setting in its NVIDIA App release highlights. Labels can vary by app version; if you do not see the exact path, search Settings for “Game Filters,” “Photo Mode,” or “Overlay.” Alt+Z opening only confirms that the overlay works—it does not prove that Freestyle is supported in the game.
Fixes worth trying if filters fail in multiple games
Update the NVIDIA App and driver
- Close ARC Raiders and its launcher.
- Open the NVIDIA App and install any available app update.
- Install the latest compatible GeForce Game Ready Driver offered by the app.
- Restart Windows, then repeat the Alt+Z and Alt+F3 tests.
The NVIDIA App is NVIDIA’s current unified software for driver updates, overlay features, and Freestyle. Older guides may describe GeForce Experience menus; use the NVIDIA App path first (official download and features).
Close competing overlays and capture tools
For a clean test, exit these from the system tray rather than merely minimizing them:
- Discord overlay and Steam overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- OBS Game Capture, Medal, Outplayed, or similar recording tools
- Third-party FPS counters, shader injectors, and other utilities that attach to games
- Remote-desktop or cloud-streaming software
Restart ARC Raiders and test again with only Windows, NVIDIA App, the game launcher, and the game running. If filters return, re-enable the other programs one at a time to find the conflict.

Reset the overlay and NVIDIA App
Turn the overlay off in NVIDIA App, exit the app completely, reopen it, turn the overlay and Game Filters back on, and relaunch the game. If the overlay still fails across multiple games, repair or reinstall the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official page. Avoid running NVIDIA App alongside an old GeForce Experience installation while diagnosing the problem. Do not delete NVIDIA configuration folders using generic online commands; locations vary, and removing the wrong data can create extra problems.
Test display modes and HDR
In ARC Raiders, try fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, and windowed mode one at a time. Apply the change, exit the game fully, relaunch it, and test again. Borderless mode can help with overlay attachment on some setups, but it cannot restore Freestyle if the game does not permit it.
For diagnosis, also try temporarily disabling HDR, using one monitor, and returning to a standard resolution and refresh rate. Disconnect remote desktop or streaming sessions and remove unusual launch parameters. These checks can expose an overlay or display-path conflict; they are not confirmed ARC Raiders-specific fixes.
Verify the game files
If ARC Raiders is also crashing, failing to launch, or behaving abnormally, use the game launcher’s Verify or Repair option. Remove ReShade or other shader injectors and restore any modified configuration files. File verification can repair damaged files, but it does not guarantee that NVIDIA Freestyle will become available. Use the game’s official launcher or repair process for anti-cheat components.
Use a clean driver installation only when the issue is broader
If the overlay and filters fail in multiple games after the steps above, reinstall the driver using NVIDIA’s Custom installation option and select Perform a clean installation if offered. Restart afterward. A full driver-removal utility such as DDU is an advanced last resort, not the first response to an ARC Raiders-only failure. Repeatedly reinstalling drivers is unlikely to fix a restriction that applies only to this game.

If ARC Raiders is the only game affected
Confirm the exact symptom, test the display modes and overlay-conflict checks once, then stop if Freestyle continues to work in other games but ARC Raiders reports that a supported game is required or has no usable Game Filter option. That pattern points toward current game compatibility or a game-side restriction. No confirmed permanent player-side restoration method is established by the available sources.
If filters worked before, consider what changed immediately beforehand: an ARC Raiders patch, anti-cheat update, NVIDIA App or driver update, switch from GeForce Experience, HDR or monitor change, or newly installed capture utility. If the failure began directly after a driver update and affects other games too, testing NVIDIA App’s driver rollback option may help identify a regression. An older driver can also lack newer-game optimizations and security fixes, so treat rollback as a diagnostic step, not a default solution.
Safe ways to improve visibility without Freestyle
These options adjust the display or game image; they do not restore the Alt+F3 filter panel.
Monitor shadow or black-equalizer controls
If your monitor has Black Equalizer, Shadow Boost, gamma presets, or similar controls, make small adjustments and check the result in a dark scene. Monitor-side controls avoid injecting code into the game, but affect everything on that display. Too much shadow lift washes out blacks and can reduce overall image quality.
NVIDIA App display color settings
NVIDIA App offers display color controls in the System > Displays area on supported setups. Depending on the app version, display, driver, and HDR state, these can adjust output characteristics such as contrast and gamma. They affect the desktop and other applications too; they are not per-game Freestyle filters (NVIDIA announcement).

If you try them, adjust gamma or contrast modestly, avoid extreme saturation or brightness, and restore defaults if the desktop looks washed out or dark areas lose detail.
Use ARC Raiders’ own display settings
Check the game’s current brightness and HDR options, and use its calibration controls if available. Menu labels and locations can change with updates, so use the settings currently shown in your build. Adjust shadow, lighting, and post-processing quality only if those options are available and improve visibility on your display.
Calibrate Windows HDR when appropriate
On an HDR-capable display, Windows HDR Calibration can help calibrate the display pipeline (Microsoft’s HDR calibration guide). It is not a substitute for per-game Freestyle presets, and poor HDR calibration or an unsuitable display can make dark scenes look worse. Compare HDR on and off rather than assuming HDR is automatically clearer.
What not to do
- Do not install ReShade, DLL injectors, modified game files, or unofficial filter-enabling tools to get around a restriction in an online game. They can cause crashes or launch failures and may conflict with anti-cheat or game rules.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall drivers when filters work in other games and only ARC Raiders fails.
- Do not crank global brightness or shadow boost to the maximum. You may reveal dark areas but lose black levels and make the whole desktop look poor.
- Do not buy a new GPU just for this issue. A game-side compatibility restriction would not be solved by upgrading the card.

Why does Alt+Z work but Game Filter does not?
Alt+Z opens the NVIDIA overlay, while Game Filter is a separate feature that must be enabled and supported by the running game. An active overlay does not guarantee ARC Raiders supports Freestyle.
Should I reinstall my NVIDIA driver?
