NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver 536.99 was a WHQL release dated August 8, 2023, focused on launch support for three games and fixes for several game-related problems. It is not a current driver in August 2026: most players should select the latest compatible driver, not install 536.99 simply in search of a general performance boost.
What NVIDIA 536.99 was
536.99 was NVIDIA’s GeForce Game Ready driver for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. NVIDIA marked it WHQL-certified and positioned it around August 2023 game releases. It was a gaming driver package, distinct from the separately published Studio Driver 536.99. NVIDIA’s release page identifies the version and release date; its driver results page lists the Windows support and game highlights.
Which games it targeted
NVIDIA highlighted three games supporting DLSS 2. The release notes do not provide universal frame-rate gains by GPU, resolution, or settings, so this is best understood as launch readiness and game-profile support rather than a guaranteed FPS increase.

Driver support and game support are separate: installing 536.99 does not add DLSS to every game or make the feature available on every NVIDIA GPU.

Game fixes listed in the release notes
NVIDIA’s 536.99 release notes list these gaming-related fixes:
- Control with DirectX 12: cutscenes and videos could show tearing and partial jitter.
- Battlefield 2042: stability could decrease when applying GeForce Experience Freestyle filters.
- Some games using DLSS 3 Frame Generation: stability could decrease when applying a GeForce Experience Freestyle filter.
- Dead Space: game stability issues.
The notes also list a potential audio problem involving Elgato Wave Link and NVIDIA Broadcast effects. These are specific fixes; players not affected by the listed games or features should not expect the same practical benefit.

DLSS 2, Frame Generation, and GPU compatibility
The three highlighted games were described as supporting DLSS 2. DLSS availability depends on both the game and the GPU. DLSS 3 Frame Generation has more restrictive hardware and game requirements; its mention in a stability fix does not mean 536.99 enables it on unsupported cards. Nor does the driver give GTX users DLSS simply because their GPU may appear on the supported-driver list.

Should you install 536.99 now?
- For ordinary gaming in August 2026: No. Use NVIDIA’s driver selector to find the latest compatible release. NVIDIA’s 536.99 page advises users to install the latest driver.
- For a specific legacy problem: It may be relevant if you need this exact version to reproduce an older setup, address a documented compatibility issue, or follow a support recommendation.
- For a laptop: Check the laptop manufacturer’s driver page first, especially if graphics switching, power management, or other model-specific behavior matters.
- For creative applications: Do not confuse this Game Ready package with Studio Driver 536.99, which NVIDIA published separately at its Studio driver page.
How to install or return to a known-good driver
If you have a specific reason to use the historical package, retrieve it only through NVIDIA’s official driver pages. The selection and installation flow is:
- Open NVIDIA’s official driver page or driver selector and choose the GPU, operating system, and driver type that match your computer.
- Check the result’s version and date. For this package, confirm 536.99 and August 8, 2023; do not rely on a search result’s headline alone.
- Download the installer from NVIDIA, close games and graphics-intensive applications, then run it and follow the setup prompts.
- Restart Windows if prompted, then check the installed driver version in NVIDIA’s driver software or Windows device information.
If an update causes trouble, reboot first, then test the affected game with overlays, Freestyle filters, and third-party monitoring tools disabled. Update the game and check its files before attributing a change to the driver. If the problem persists, use the installer or Windows Device Manager to return to a known-good driver; preserve the working installer or create a restore point before making changes. A clean reinstall is a later troubleshooting option, not a required step for every update.

What “enhance gaming” means here
536.99 was a targeted Game Ready update: its clearest benefits were readiness for the three named DLSS 2 games and fixes for particular stability or display issues. NVIDIA did not publish broad benchmark results establishing a universal performance uplift. Game patches, Windows updates, settings, and shader-cache changes can also affect how a game runs, so an improvement or regression cannot automatically be credited to this driver.
