An unofficial PCI-ID database update published on October 27, 2024 appeared to reveal Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 50-series laptop GPU range, from the RTX 5050 to the RTX 5090, including an RTX 5070 Ti. The listing was not an Nvidia announcement, but its six-model prediction was later broadly validated by Nvidia’s official laptop lineup and driver documentation.
The important caveat is that PCI device IDs identify hardware for operating systems and drivers. They do not reveal a laptop’s power limit, cooling quality, performance, launch date, or complete specifications.
What actually leaked
The story concerned entries in an unofficial, community-maintained PCI device-ID database—not a product announcement, retail listing, benchmark, or regulatory filing. Specialist reports interpreted the entries as references to six forthcoming mobile GPUs: the GeForce RTX 5050, RTX 5060, RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090.

They can also appear before a product is finalized. Engineering samples, validation hardware, board variants, firmware changes, or IDs that never reach retail can all appear in development databases. The original report therefore represented meaningful pre-launch evidence, but not confirmation of a shipping product.
VideoCardz reported the database entries, while Notebookcheck summarized the apparent six-GPU range.
The leaked device IDs
The October 2024 listing used labels such as “Max-Q/Mobile.” The table below preserves the leak-era interpretation and compares it with Nvidia’s later official driver names.

Why did several GPUs have two IDs?
The existence of paired IDs does not prove that Nvidia planned separate performance tiers, TGP classes, memory configurations, or die revisions for every model. The IDs could reflect different board or platform variants, engineering samples, silicon revisions, OEM implementations, firmware distinctions, or identifiers added during separate validation stages.
Nvidia’s later official Linux supported-chip list confirms multiple IDs for several laptop products, but it does not explain the exact commercial purpose of every pair. The safest conclusion is simply that multiple PCI identifiers existed or were associated with the same marketed GPU family.
Was “Max-Q” a separate GPU?
No—not in the straightforward retail-product sense suggested by the leak’s wording. The database and reports used labels such as “RTX 5090 Max-Q/Mobile,” but Nvidia’s final consumer terminology uses names such as GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU.
Max-Q refers to Nvidia’s laptop design and efficiency technologies. It should not automatically be treated as a separate GPU SKU, and the available evidence does not establish that each pair of IDs represented Max-Q and non-Max-Q versions. Nvidia’s current RTX 50 Series laptop page presents a unified Laptop GPU range.

What did the leak suggest about the GPU dies?
The original report associated the 2C18 and 2C19 entries with GB203M/GN22, interpreting them as apparent mobile versions of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. That was an unofficial association or inference, not a complete Nvidia-confirmed die map.
Nvidia’s later driver documentation confirms product-to-ID recognition, but the cited list does not establish a full die-to-model mapping for every RTX 50 Laptop GPU. The GB203M/GN22 claim should therefore be read as reported pre-launch information, not definitive architectural disclosure.
What Nvidia eventually confirmed
Nvidia’s official consumer laptop lineup now contains the same six broad product tiers suggested by the 2024 listing:

This substantially strengthens the original leak’s credibility. It does not, however, make the 2024 database entry an official Nvidia announcement retroactively.
Timeline: leak to launch
- October 27, 2024: Unofficial PCI-ID entries were reported for the apparent RTX 50-series laptop range.
- January 2025: Nvidia formally announced its RTX 50-series laptop family.
- March 2025: Nvidia announced availability beginning for RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti laptops.
- April 2025: RTX 5070 laptop systems were announced to begin availability.
- August 18, 2026: Nvidia’s current product page listed all six consumer Laptop GPU models, while its driver documentation listed the corresponding PCI IDs.
The January announcement did not provide equally detailed availability dates for every model subsequently listed on Nvidia’s current page. The leak therefore did not confirm an exact launch schedule.
What a PCI device ID can—and cannot—tell you
Useful for
- Checking whether an operating system or driver recognizes the GPU.
- Investigating Linux compatibility.
- Hardware inventory and diagnostics.
- Distinguishing similarly named devices in software.
Not enough to determine
- Total graphics power or sustained wattage.
- Cooling performance and sustained clock speeds.
- Actual game frame rates.
- Battery life.
- MUX or Advanced Optimus configuration.
- The laptop’s CPU, display, RAM, storage, or upgradeability.
- The exact retail availability of a particular laptop.
The same nominal Laptop GPU can perform very differently across systems because manufacturers choose different power limits, cooling systems, chassis designs, CPUs, memory configurations, and firmware.

On Windows, open Device Manager → Display adapters → select the GPU → Properties → Details → Hardware Ids.

On Linux, run:
lspci -nn | grep -i -E 'vga|3d|nvidia'For Nvidia’s model-level identification, you can also run:
nvidia-smi -Lnvidia-smi identifies the GPU model, while lspci -nn exposes the PCI identifier. The exact subsystem-ID formatting can vary between laptop manufacturers.
What buyers should compare instead
If you are choosing an RTX 50-series gaming laptop, the GPU name is only the starting point. Compare the exact:
- GPU TGP and manufacturer power profile.
- Cooling system and chassis thickness.
- CPU model and memory-channel configuration.
- RAM capacity and whether it can be upgraded.
- Display resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and response time.
- MUX switch or Advanced Optimus support.
- VRAM configuration, especially for the RTX 5070’s 8GB and 12GB variants.
- SSD capacity, warranty, return policy, and regional availability.
An RTX 5090 Laptop GPU in a thin, low-power chassis is not automatically equivalent to another RTX 5090 laptop with a larger cooler and higher power limit. Likewise, the shared “5090” branding does not make the laptop GPU equivalent to a desktop RTX 5090.
Depending on price and priorities, a discounted RTX 40-series laptop may offer better value, while a desktop RTX 50-series system can provide higher sustained performance at the cost of portability. Radeon laptops and cloud gaming are alternatives, but they do not provide identical Nvidia-specific features, CUDA compatibility, or local hardware ownership.

The Bottom Line
The October 2024 RTX 50 mobile device-ID leak was unofficial but broadly accurate: its six-model range and listed identifiers later aligned with Nvidia’s official Laptop GPU lineup and driver documentation. It did not prove final specifications, performance, power limits, die assignments, or launch dates. Treat PCI IDs as software-identification data—not as a substitute for the full specifications of the laptop carrying the GPU.
