At launch, yes—but with important qualifications. HotHardware’s January 23, 2025 review found the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition to be the fastest consumer gaming GPU it tested. Its strengths were exceptional 4K performance, ray tracing, 32GB of VRAM, and NVIDIA’s newest rendering features. Its weaknesses were equally clear: a $1,999 launch MSRP, 575W board power, demanding system requirements, and a relatively modest 25%–40% like-for-like gain over the RTX 4090.
That makes the RTX 5090 FE an uncompromising flagship, not the best-value GPU for most PC gamers. The original review establishes launch-period performance leadership; it does not, by itself, prove that the card remains the market leader in August 2026.
What HotHardware’s Page 5 actually concludes
The target page is the summary and conclusion of HotHardware’s RTX 5090 Founders Edition review, not a standalone benchmark page. Read alongside the review’s gaming, power, thermal, and feature testing, its conclusion is straightforward:

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- The RTX 5090 was the fastest consumer GPU in the launch-period test field.
- Its conventional performance advantage over the RTX 4090 was roughly 25%–40%, depending on the workload.
- New DLSS and frame-generation features could produce much larger displayed-FPS gains in supported games.
- The card consumed more power and offered weaker value than the RTX 4090’s launch proposition.
“King of PC gaming” therefore means maximum performance, not best value, efficiency, affordability, or suitability for most systems.

RTX 5090 Founders Edition specifications
| Specification | RTX 5090 FE |
|---|---|
| Architecture | Blackwell |
| CUDA cores | 21,760 |
| Memory | 32GB GDDR7 |
| Memory bus | 512-bit |
| Base/boost clock | 2.01GHz / 2.41GHz |
| Rated board power | 575W |

| NVIDIA minimum PSU guidance | 850W |
According to NVIDIA’s official specifications, the card uses either three PCIe 8-pin cables through the included adapter or one 450W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. NVIDIA also advises an additional 36mm of clearance for the power cable. The 850W figure is a minimum guideline, not a universal recommendation: a power-hungry CPU, multiple drives, pumps, overclocking, or other expansion cards may justify a higher-quality, higher-capacity PSU.
Gaming performance: fast, especially at 4K
HotHardware’s 25%–40% estimate is a useful summary of the RTX 5090’s like-for-like advantage over the RTX 4090, but it should not be treated as a universal percentage. Results vary by game, resolution, settings, test platform, driver, and whether ray tracing or upscaling is enabled.
GamersNexus reported approximately 20%–50% rasterization gains at 4K, depending on the title, and commonly around 27%–35% in 4K ray tracing. Those gains are most meaningful for demanding 4K workloads. At 1080p and many 1440p settings, CPU limitations can prevent the GPU from showing its full advantage.

The RTX 5090 makes the most sense with a high-refresh 4K display, demanding ray-traced games, or professional workloads that can use its 32GB memory and NVIDIA software ecosystem. It is excessive for many ordinary 1440p systems and particularly wasteful when the CPU—not the GPU—is limiting frame rates.
DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation change the headline numbers
The RTX 5090’s most dramatic results may involve generated frames rather than a proportional increase in directly rendered frames. These technologies should be kept separate:
- Native rendering: The GPU renders each displayed frame directly.
- DLSS Super Resolution: The game renders at a lower internal resolution and AI-reconstructs the output.
- Ray Reconstruction: AI assists the reconstruction of ray-traced effects.
- Frame Generation: AI inserts generated frames between rendered frames.
- Multi Frame Generation: Supported RTX 50-series games can generate multiple frames between traditionally rendered frames.
A higher displayed FPS counter can improve perceived smoothness, but it does not equal the same number of directly rendered frames. Base frame rate still matters for responsiveness, image stability, and latency. GamersNexus criticized reviews that labeled results simply as “DLSS 4” without making the frame-generation multiplier clear.

In testing by The FPS Review, DLSS upscaling alone often reduced latency compared with native rendering, while higher frame-generation levels increased latency—particularly maximum latency. Frame generation can make a demanding game feel smoother, but it cannot substitute for a sufficiently high base frame rate in competitive or latency-sensitive games.
Power, thermals, noise, and case compatibility
The Founders Edition is more compact than many oversized partner cards, but it remains a three-slot, 575W GPU. The case must provide enough length, slot space, airflow, and connector clearance. The power connector should be fully seated, and the cable should not be sharply bent immediately at the plug.
Reviewers differed in emphasis. HotHardware described the card as relatively cool and quiet for its performance class while identifying it as the least efficient and highest-power option in its comparison. GamersNexus found the GPU cooling solution surprisingly effective but observed warmer memory temperatures. Tom’s Hardware was more critical of the Founders Edition’s operating temperatures.

The practical conclusion is not that the FE is thermally unusable; it is that its absolute performance comes with substantial heat output and power demand. Buyers should assess the complete system rather than relying on the GPU’s relatively compact exterior.

The RTX 4090 launched at $1,599, while the RTX 5090 launched at $1,999—a $400 increase before taxes, market premiums, or system upgrades. The 5090 is a meaningful upgrade for a 4090 owner who plays path-traced 4K games, uses a high-refresh 4K monitor, needs 32GB of VRAM, or specifically wants RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation.
It is a weak upgrade when the existing 4090 already delivers the desired experience, when the buyer mainly plays esports games at 1080p or 1440p, or when the upgrade requires replacing the PSU, case, monitor, or cooling system. Native-rendering enthusiasts should also temper expectations: the launch-era raw performance gain was significant but not transformational.

Who should buy the RTX 5090 Founders Edition?
Buy it when:
- You want the highest possible 4K ray-traced or path-traced performance.
- You have, or are building, a system with appropriate power, cooling, CPU performance, and case clearance.
- You value 32GB of VRAM, CUDA, creator tools, or NVIDIA’s AI features.
- You accept diminishing returns and a premium price for flagship performance.
Choose something else when:
- You mainly play at 1080p or 1440p.
- You want the best frames-per-dollar or performance-per-watt.
- Your existing RTX 4090 already meets your needs.
- You dislike frame generation or want benchmark results based primarily on native rendering.
- The card would require an expensive system rebuild.
For buyers considering the FE specifically, the official NVIDIA buying page is the appropriate place to check current listings. The $1,999 launch MSRP should not be treated as an August 2026 street price, and current availability or pricing is not established by the original review.
How to interpret “still king” in 2026
The defensible statement is: the RTX 5090 was the fastest consumer gaming GPU tested by HotHardware at launch. Whether it remains the fastest, most efficient, or best-value option in August 2026 requires contemporary benchmarks, drivers, game patches, competing products, and live prices.
Even if its absolute performance leadership remains intact, “best GPU” depends on the criterion. The RTX 5090 leads the conversation for uncompromised performance, but a cheaper card may be better for value, a lower-power card may be better for efficiency, and an RTX 4090 may be the more rational upgrade target for buyers who find one at an attractive price.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The RTX 5090 Founders Edition was the launch-era performance king and remains an exceptional choice for uncompromised 4K ray-traced gaming, 32GB VRAM, and demanding creator or AI workloads. It is not a sensible purchase for ordinary 1440p gaming or value-focused buyers. Its $1,999 launch price, 575W power requirement, system demands, and reliance on feature-supported rendering make it a specialist flagship rather than the best GPU for everyone.
