NVIDIA Neural Texture Compression (NTC) can reduce the memory used by game textures by storing material data as a compact neural representation and reconstructing texture values when the GPU needs them. NVIDIA reports savings of up to 7× or 8× in particular demonstrations, but those are not guaranteed whole-game reductions. NTC is a developer SDK, not a setting that players can switch on for games that have not integrated it.
What NVIDIA Neural Texture Compression does
Traditional GPU texture formats such as BCn compress texture data into blocks that the GPU can sample. NTC takes a different approach: it encodes related material textures and their mipmaps in a compact neural representation. At runtime, a small material-specific multilayer perceptron reconstructs texture values for the coordinates the renderer requests.
NVIDIA’s research describes the technique as supporting joint compression of material textures and mipmap chains, with random-access decompression. In other words, the renderer can request texture data as part of its sampling workflow instead of first expanding an entire image. NVIDIA’s GDC update also describes pairing NTC with texture streaming so that accessed portions can be decompressed and cached.
How much VRAM can NTC save?
NVIDIA’s 2025 materials give headline savings of up to 7× in VRAM or system memory at similar visual quality and up to 8× versus traditional block compression at similar fidelity. These are claims from different NVIDIA materials, not a single guaranteed result or a universal whole-game benchmark. Actual savings depend on the content, implementation and runtime mode.

The RTXNTC SDK documentation gives a more concrete example: for a 2K material bundle, its table lists 12.00 MB of VRAM for BCn, 2.50 MB for NTC inference-on-sample, and 12.00 MB for NTC inference-on-load after transcoding to BCn. The SDK documentation also says about 5 bits per texel can produce results comparable to BCn’s 40–50 dB PSNR for many real-world material bundles. PSNR is an image-comparison measure; that figure is not a promise that every material or game will look identical.
NVIDIA Research also shows a project demonstration in which an NTC example has four times the resolution, or 16 times the texels, of a BC-high reference while using 30% less memory. That illustrates a possible trade-off—more detail under a memory limit—but is not a representative game benchmark.

Inference on load versus inference on sample
The choice of runtime mode determines whether NTC reduces the texture data resident in VRAM or mainly changes how assets are packaged and loaded.
| Mode | What happens | VRAM and loading | Runtime trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inference on load | The neural bundle is decoded when the game or map loads, then transcoded to BCn. | In NVIDIA’s SDK 2K example, the resulting BCn texture uses 12.00 MB of VRAM, the same as the BCn example. The SDK says this mode reduces disk size and PCIe traffic. | Tom’s Hardware reports no runtime performance overhead relative to block compression because the transcode happens during loading. |
| Inference on sample | The neural representation remains resident, and the GPU reconstructs values as textures are sampled. | In NVIDIA’s SDK 2K example, it uses 2.50 MB of VRAM versus 12.00 MB for BCn. | It adds neural-inference work to sampling. NVIDIA says Cooperative Vector hardware can accelerate that work; the SDK also provides DP4a or integer-math fallback paths. |
The sample-time mode is the one that delivers the largest resident-texture memory reduction in NVIDIA’s worked example, but it moves work into the rendering path. Tom’s Hardware reports that stochastic texture filtering can produce visible noise without suitable anti-aliasing: DLSS cleaned up the noise in its tested setup, while TAA might not remove it completely. Those observations describe that testing, not every engine or implementation.

What hardware and software are required?
NVIDIA’s RTX Kit guide lists Turing and newer GPUs, driver 570 or later, CMake 3.28, Vulkan 1.3, and Windows SDK 10.0.22621.0 for its documented NTC workflow. These are developer-workflow requirements, not a promise that a particular game supports NTC simply because it runs on compatible hardware.
The SDK documents Vulkan paths and non-Cooperative-Vector DirectX 12 paths for shipping. Its DirectX 12 LinAlg path using Shader Model 6.10 is marked preview/testing-only in the repository documentation, and the README says not to ship products using that path. The available path and performance therefore depend on how a developer integrates the SDK.

Will NTC work in games you already own?
Only if the game’s developers integrate it. NTC is part of NVIDIA’s RTX Kit developer SDK; it is not a driver toggle that automatically converts an existing game’s BCn textures. Developers must prepare or train/compress material bundles, integrate and package the SDK, and choose how textures are reconstructed. Buying an RTX card does not retrofit NTC into unsupported titles.
The sources covered here do not establish a universal adoption count or a representative cross-game benchmark. Treat NTC as a development technology with promising demonstrations, rather than an assumed feature of current games.

Why game developers might use it
High-detail scenes can contain large collections of material maps, making textures a substantial part of a game’s memory budget. NTC’s approach is to compress related maps together and reconstruct only the texture data needed by sampling. If a game uses inference on sample and achieves a smaller resident footprint, developers could spend some of that memory budget on additional texture detail or other assets. NVIDIA’s higher-resolution demonstration shows that possibility, but the practical balance depends on the game’s content and the cost of runtime inference.
Inference on load offers a different use: a smaller packaged bundle and less PCIe traffic in the SDK’s description, while restoring textures to BCn for conventional runtime sampling. It may therefore be useful when packaging or loading matters more than reducing resident VRAM. Neither mode is a free improvement in every dimension: the memory benefit of inference on sample comes with computation during sampling, while inference on load does not retain the neural bundle’s smaller example footprint in VRAM.
