NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro now costs about $300 in the U.S.: the company’s spokesperson told Ars Technica the new $299 price took effect October 2, 2026, and Ars reported a $299.99 retail price. The standard SHIELD TV was also reported discontinued. NVIDIA cited rising component costs, including memory, but did not say how much of the increase came specifically from DRAM.
What changed, and when?
The SHIELD TV Pro’s price rose by $100 in nominal terms compared with its $199.99 U.S. launch price in 2019. NVIDIA’s spokesperson gave Ars Technica a quoted price of $299, effective October 2, 2026; Ars reported the U.S. retail price as $299.99. Those are the spokesperson’s stated figure and the publication’s reported listing price, respectively.
NVIDIA launched the 2019 lineup at $149 for the standard SHIELD TV and $199 for the SHIELD TV Pro. The new Pro price is roughly 50% above its original price, an arithmetic comparison of those historical and reported U.S. figures, not an inflation-adjusted comparison. NVIDIA’s October 2019 launch announcement lists the original prices and Pro configuration.
Inventory information is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of what is available now. Ars reported on October 2, 2026, that NVIDIA’s store was out of stock and Best Buy had the Pro at the new price.

Why did NVIDIA raise the SHIELD TV Pro price?
An NVIDIA spokesperson told Ars Technica: “Starting October 2, SHIELD Pro will be priced at $299. The cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry.” The company’s explanation is therefore broader component-cost pressure, with memory included. The statement does not identify DRAM as the sole cause or quantify its contribution to the price increase.
Ars Technica’s October 2 report attributes the statement to an NVIDIA spokesperson. It is not a published breakdown of manufacturing costs.

Is the NVIDIA SHIELD TV discontinued?
October 2 coverage reported that NVIDIA had discontinued the standard, or base, SHIELD TV. The earlier timeline matters: in July 2026, NVIDIA told Android Authority that the base model was “largely out of stock due to demand” and that it had no update to share on future availability. That July wording described limited stock and uncertainty; it was not itself an announcement that production had ended. 9to5Google’s October 2 report corroborated the lineup change.
In the same July statement, NVIDIA said the Pro remained available and that the SHIELD platform continued to receive updates “for more than 10 years.” This is NVIDIA’s statement as quoted by Android Authority on July 11, 2026—not a newly verified October support commitment. What does the SHIELD TV Pro offer for about $300?
The Pro is a 2019-generation device. NVIDIA’s specifications describe hardware and supported features, not results from a current comparative test. Its appeal at this price depends less on basic app access than on whether its particular home-theater and media capabilities match your setup.
| Capability | What NVIDIA lists | Why it may matter |
|---|---|---|
| Processing and memory | Tegra X1+ processor, 256-core GPU, 3 GB RAM | Relevant to the Pro’s media-device capabilities; these figures do not establish how it performs against current competitors. |
| Internal and expandable storage | 16 GB internal storage; USB flash drives or hard drives can expand it. The system uses some of the internal capacity. | Useful if you keep media locally or need more room for apps. External storage is not included. |
| Connections | Two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2 and CEC, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 + LE | USB and wired Ethernet can suit a more involved media setup than a basic streaming stick. |
| Video | Dolby Vision HDR, HDR10, AI-enhanced upscaling up to 4K at 60 fps; listed formats include H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9, H.264 and MPEG1/2 | Potentially relevant to a particular display, video library or playback setup. Support can depend on the app and configuration. |
| Audio | Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital and Digital Plus; listed DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD passthrough; high-resolution playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz over HDMI and USB | Could matter if your receiver or soundbar needs a specific passthrough format. Confirm compatibility with your equipment. |
| Software and apps | Android 11 powered by Android TV, Chromecast 4K built in, NVIDIA SHIELD Experience software upgrades; Plex is among the listed apps | Provides familiar streaming-platform functions as well as a possible role in a Plex-based setup. |
These specifications come from NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro product page. NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement specifically described using the Pro’s two USB ports to run Plex Media Server and connect high-capacity drives or other USB devices. That makes Plex server use and external storage among the more distinctive reasons to consider this model; it does not mean every listed format is supported in every app or configuration.

Is SHIELD TV Pro worth $300?
At roughly $300, the case for the Pro is strongest when you can name a feature your current setup needs. Its USB ports, storage expansion, Ethernet and audio passthrough options may suit a home-theater system, local media collection or Plex server arrangement. If you only want to watch common streaming apps, the supplied product details do not establish a reason that this older-generation device is worth the premium over other streamers.

- Storage and Plex: Decide whether you will attach USB storage or run Plex Media Server; the Pro has two USB ports, but drives are separate.
- Price and availability: Verify the live price, stock and warranty where you live. The $299.99 figure was reported for U.S. retail, and the October stock report is not a current inventory check.
- Update expectations: Treat NVIDIA’s “more than 10 years” update statement as its July 2026 description of platform support, not a specific promise of a future end date for this model.
- Alternatives: Compare the price and update commitments of other devices available in your region, as well as their codec, HDR, audio passthrough, networking and USB capabilities. No comparative test establishes a best overall option here.
