Nvidia’s GeForce Game Ready Driver 581.29 reportedly includes a fix for a bug that could cause gaming-laptop performance to deteriorate over time in Optimus mode. Nvidia released the driver on September 10, 2025, but its public release notes did not clearly identify the Optimus fix. The information came from a reported Nvidia representative statement reproduced in community discussions, so it should not be treated as confirmation that every Optimus performance problem has been solved.
What Nvidia reportedly fixed
The affected laptops could initially perform normally, then slow down after an extended gaming session while using standard Optimus mode. Reported symptoms included falling frame rates, stutter, unusually low Nvidia GPU utilization or clocks, and increased activity on the integrated GPU. Some users temporarily restored performance by switching to a laptop’s Ultimate, Discrete GPU, or Nvidia GPU only mode.
These symptoms come from user reports rather than a published Nvidia benchmark. Low GPU utilization alone does not prove that this bug is present: CPU limits, frame caps, thermal throttling, background software, and incorrect GPU assignment can produce similar results.

The historically relevant release is GeForce Game Ready Driver 581.29, released September 10, 2025. A reported Nvidia statement said that the fix had accidentally been omitted from the earlier 581.15 branch and would be included in 581.29. Nvidia’s official driver page confirms the 581.29 release, but its public highlights do not clearly document this particular Optimus fix.

Because 581.29 is no longer necessarily the newest driver, owners should normally install the latest compatible driver offered by Nvidia or their laptop manufacturer. Testing 581.29 specifically may still be useful when investigating this historical issue.
Why Optimus can affect gaming performance
On a conventional MSHybrid Optimus laptop, the Nvidia GPU renders demanding games while the integrated GPU usually drives the built-in display. The rendered frames must then be copied back through the integrated GPU for presentation. Nvidia describes this arrangement as a source of potential performance and latency overhead.
That normal design limitation is different from the reported 581.29 bug. The driver was said to address performance degradation over time, not eliminate the ordinary overhead of a muxless Optimus design.
Laptops with Advanced Optimus use a display multiplexer to transfer display ownership between the integrated and discrete GPUs. A hardware MUX can provide a similar discrete-GPU-only path. These designs can improve gaming performance and latency while preserving battery-saving behavior when the Nvidia GPU is not needed, but implementation varies by model.

How to install and test the driver
- Record the current version. Check the NVIDIA App or NVIDIA Control Panel and note the installed driver, laptop model, GPU, BIOS version, and current GPU mode.
- Choose the download source. Use the laptop manufacturer’s validated driver first if the system relies on custom power limits, display switching, fan controls, or an OEM control utility. Otherwise, use Nvidia’s official driver page.
- Install the Game Ready Driver and restart the laptop.
- Reproduce the original conditions. Use the same game, graphics settings, power profile, display arrangement, and Optimus mode that previously caused the slowdown.
- Compare short and long sessions. The reported failure involved degradation over time, so a quick launch test is not enough.
During testing, monitor frame rate and frame-time consistency along with:
- Nvidia GPU utilization and clock speed
- GPU power draw and temperature
- Integrated GPU utilization
- CPU temperature, utilization, and clock speed
- AC-power status and the laptop’s performance profile
Save screenshots or logs before and after degradation. A useful record should include whether a dock or external monitor was connected, whether alt-tab or sleep/wake preceded the problem, and whether discrete-GPU-only mode changed the result.
If updating does not solve the problem
Use the following checks before blaming Optimus:
Check power and thermal settings
- Connect the original AC adapter directly to the laptop.
- Use the manufacturer’s Performance or Turbo profile rather than Silent or Battery Saver.
- Check Windows power mode.
- Look for overheating, blocked vents, dust, fan failure, or CPU/GPU power sharing.
- Confirm that the adapter is detected correctly.
A gradual clock-speed decline may be thermal or power throttling rather than a graphics-driver fault.
Confirm the game uses the Nvidia GPU
Assign the game’s actual executable—not only its launcher—to the high-performance GPU in Windows Graphics settings. Also check the per-application profile in NVIDIA Control Panel. Nvidia documents these GPU-selection controls here.
Low Nvidia utilization can be normal when a game is CPU-limited or frame-capped, so compare GPU behavior with frame times and CPU data.

Test discrete-GPU-only mode
If the laptop supports it, select Nvidia GPU only, Discrete, Ultimate, or the equivalent option in the manufacturer’s utility. Restart if required and repeat the same test.

Discrete mode generally uses more power, produces more heat, and reduces battery life, so it is best treated as a diagnostic comparison unless the laptop’s design or workload justifies using it permanently.
Try the OEM driver and check firmware
Nvidia distributes notebook drivers, but manufacturers may provide versions certified for a specific laptop model. Check the OEM support page if the issue began after a BIOS, embedded-controller, Windows, or control-utility update—or if a new Nvidia driver causes black screens, sleep/wake failures, fan-control problems, or lost display-mode options.
Roll back carefully
If the update introduces new problems, return to the laptop maker’s previous validated driver or use the Nvidia installer’s clean-install option where appropriate. Record each driver version and result instead of repeatedly reinstalling without a comparison plan.

Advanced Optimus has its own switching limitations that are unrelated to the reported 581.29 degradation fix. Nvidia lists conditions that can interfere with automatic display switching, including:

- DirectX 9 applications
- Another existing DX9 application
- Battery operation
- External monitors
- An attached eGPU
- Some docks used for charging instead of the laptop’s normal AC adapter
A display handoff can also freeze the screen briefly. Manually switching modes while a DX9 application is running may cause that application to freeze or crash.
Nvidia has also documented a separate case in which Steamwebhelper.exe blocked Advanced Optimus automatic switching after a Steam update. The documented workaround was to close Steam and select Nvidia GPU only in NVIDIA Control Panel. That issue should not be confused with the performance-degradation report.
What the fix does not mean
- It does not make every Optimus laptop perform like a permanent discrete-GPU-only system.
- It does not eliminate normal display-copy latency or the performance overhead of standard muxless Optimus.
- It does not guarantee identical results across laptop models, GPU generations, BIOS versions, or OEM power profiles.
- It does not fix thermal throttling, incorrect GPU assignment, CPU bottlenecks, bad AC-adapter detection, or every Advanced Optimus switching failure.
- It does not establish a universal FPS improvement; no model-independent benchmark is documented for this report.
Bottom line for affected laptop owners
Owners seeing normal performance followed by a sustained slowdown in Optimus mode should update beyond 581.15, preferably using the newest compatible Nvidia or OEM driver, and then test the same workload over a long session. Driver 581.29 is the historically identified release, although the Optimus fix was reportedly communicated rather than clearly listed in Nvidia’s public release notes.
If the slowdown remains, compare Optimus with discrete-GPU-only mode while checking temperatures, power limits, GPU assignment, firmware, external displays, docks, and OEM utilities. The reported fix addresses one software failure—not every performance limitation or fault associated with Nvidia Optimus.
