The RTX 4060 is the better graphics card for almost every gaming PC. It delivers substantially stronger gaming and ray-tracing performance, has 8GB rather than 6GB of VRAM, and supports DLSS Frame Generation and AV1 encoding. The RTX 3050 6GB is worth considering when its 70W, no-auxiliary-power design solves a real compatibility problem—or when it costs substantially less and you accept entry-level performance.

This comparison is specifically between the desktop RTX 3050 6GB and the standard desktop RTX 4060, not the RTX 3050 8GB, a laptop GPU, or the RTX 4060 Ti.

RTX 3050 6GB vs. RTX 4060: specifications

The RTX 3050 6GB is an Ampere entry-level card. The RTX 4060 is a newer Ada Lovelace GPU intended primarily for 1080p gaming. Specifications help explain their differences, but do not translate directly into a fixed performance ratio across games.

Do not confuse the RTX 3050 6GB and 8GB

The RTX 3050 6GB is not just an RTX 3050 8GB with less memory. Nvidia lists the 8GB version with 2,560 CUDA cores, a 128-bit bus, and 130W graphics-card power; the 6GB version has fewer cores, a 96-bit bus, and a 70W rating. Confirm the capacity in a listing rather than relying on the name alone. See Nvidia’s RTX 3050 specifications.

Gaming performance: the RTX 4060 is in a different class

The RTX 4060 is not a small step up from the RTX 3050 6GB. It has substantially more graphics and ray-tracing capability, and is the more suitable choice for 1080p High settings, high-refresh esports, and more demanding modern games. Tom’s Hardware’s coverage of the 3050 6GB, citing TechPowerUp testing, reports that it failed to reach 60 FPS at 1080p in many tested games. Its RTX 4060 review positions that card as a mainstream 1080p option.

What to expect at 1080p

  • RTX 3050 6GB: A reasonable fit for older, indie, and lighter games, often at Medium to High settings. Competitive games can run well with settings tuned for responsiveness. Do not assume 60 FPS at Ultra in current demanding games; reduced settings, upscaling, or a frame-rate cap may be needed.
  • RTX 4060: Better suited to High or Ultra settings in many games, and to high-refresh play in esports titles. Results still vary by game, CPU, patch, driver, and settings.

1440p, 1% lows, and VRAM

The RTX 4060 is the more viable 1440p choice, particularly with sensible settings and upscaling, but its 8GB of VRAM does not make it a guaranteed 1440p Ultra card. The 3050 6GB’s smaller capacity can constrain newer games, high-resolution texture packs, ray tracing, heavy mods, and 1440p; reducing texture quality can help, but does not erase the GPU’s performance gap. The RTX 4060’s 8GB and 128-bit memory interface are also compromises, as Tom’s Hardware notes in its review.

Average FPS is not the whole experience. 1% lows indicate how often performance dips below the average, while memory pressure can cause stutter or force lower texture settings. Compare cards using the same games, resolution, settings, and test conditions; treat Frame Generation results separately from conventionally rendered or upscaled FPS.

Ray tracing, DLSS, and Frame Generation

The RTX 4060’s third-generation RT cores and fourth-generation Tensor cores make it the stronger card for ray tracing and AI-assisted rendering. The RTX 3050 6GB supports DLSS Super Resolution in supported games, but its second-generation RT hardware is less suited to demanding ray-traced effects. Ray tracing on the 3050 may require lowering other settings or turning the effect off.

The RTX 4060 supports DLSS 3, including Frame Generation. Nvidia describes DLSS 3 as combining Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Reflex in supported games. Frame Generation inserts generated frames between rendered ones, so report its FPS separately from native rendering or upscaling. It does not fix weak base performance, and generated frames can bring artifacts or added latency in some situations. For responsive play, a healthy base frame rate still matters. See Nvidia’s RTX 4060 feature announcement and the RTX 3050 product page.

Power, PSU, and small-PC compatibility

The RTX 3050 6GB’s clearest advantage is its low power requirement. Nvidia rates it at 70W and recommends a 300W system power supply; its reference design needs no auxiliary PCIe power connector. The RTX 4060 is rated at about 115W, and Nvidia lists a 550W recommended system supply. Those are GPU and system-level figures respectively, not interchangeable measures. The RTX 4060 uses more power in absolute terms, but provides considerably more performance per watt. Tom’s Hardware lists its nominal TGP as 115W in its power review.

A 300W label alone does not prove an old or proprietary PSU is healthy or suitable. Check the full system, available connectors, and the exact card maker’s requirements. The 3050’s name does not guarantee a low-profile, single-slot card, and the 4060’s connector arrangement varies by model.

Check an OEM or compact PC before ordering

  1. Measure the available card length and height, and confirm whether the case needs a low-profile bracket.
  2. Check cooler thickness, slot clearance, and whether the card will block adjacent expansion slots.
  3. Read the PSU label and inspect its age, quality, and available PCIe power connectors; do not rely on wattage alone.
  4. Compare the exact card’s connector and power requirements with the system and motherboard documentation.
  5. Verify physical slot access and any OEM BIOS or chassis restrictions, especially in proprietary Dell, HP, Lenovo, or Acer systems.

Nvidia cautions that add-in-card specifications can vary by manufacturer; use the exact card’s product page, such as MSI’s RTX 3050 Gaming X 6G listing, to check an individual design.

Streaming, recording, and creative applications

The RTX 4060 is the more capable choice for AV1 recording or streaming, heavier GPU-accelerated work, and projects that benefit from more compute performance or the extra 2GB of VRAM. The RTX 3050 6GB remains usable for basic CUDA, NVENC, Studio-driver, and GPU-accelerated tasks, but is less suitable when projects are large or compute-heavy.

There is no single reliable percentage improvement for Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, or AI applications: results depend on codec, effects, renderer, project size, and software version. Check benchmarks for the specific application and workflow rather than treating gaming performance as a direct proxy.

Price and value: compare the live gap, not launch prices

Nvidia launched the RTX 4060 at a US MSRP of $299 in June 2023; that historical figure does not establish its current price. Current prices vary by country, retailer, stock, model, and new or used condition. No single live price is established here, so compare the exact cards available to you, including shipping, tax, rebates, and return terms. The launch price is documented in Nvidia’s announcement.

  • If the 4060 costs only moderately more, its gaming performance and feature advantages make it the stronger buy.
  • The 3050 6GB can make sense at a substantial discount when its low-power, no-auxiliary-connector design is actually needed.
  • If the 3050 6GB approaches 4060 pricing, it is poor value for a gaming-focused buyer.
  • For used cards, check condition, warranty or return coverage, and exact model identity. Compare against other GPUs at the same local price rather than relying on launch pricing or old price-history entries.

Who should buy each card?

Choose the RTX 4060 if

  • Gaming performance, 1080p High settings, or sensible-settings 1440p is the priority.
  • You want ray tracing to be more usable, or want DLSS Frame Generation in supported games.
  • You stream or record and want AV1 encoding support.
  • Your PSU, connectors, and case can accommodate the exact card, and the price gap is reasonable.

Choose the RTX 3050 6GB if

  • Your desktop has a genuine power or connector constraint that rules out a typical RTX 4060.
  • You have a suitable, healthy 300W-class system and the exact card fits the case and slot layout.
  • You mostly play esports, older, indie, or less demanding games, and are comfortable lowering settings in demanding titles.
  • It is substantially cheaper than the 4060 and its performance limits suit your needs.

Do not buy the 3050 6GB just for its RTX branding, DLSS support, or lower power draw if your system can run a 4060 and gaming performance is the priority. If neither card fits your budget or system, compare same-priced alternatives such as a used RTX 3060 12GB, Radeon RX 6600 or RX 6650 XT, Intel Arc A580 or A750, or current-generation entry-level cards. Their power, features, compatibility, and local prices differ; check Resizable BAR support for Arc and compare the actual models rather than assuming an older card is the best new purchase.
