NVIDIA announced DLSS 4.5 at CES 2026 on January 6, 2026. The update has two distinct parts: a second-generation transformer model for DLSS Super Resolution that NVIDIA made available across GeForce RTX generations, and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation—including a new 6X mode—reserved for GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs. In practice, older RTX owners can try the image-reconstruction upgrade, but only RTX 50 cards receive the complete DLSS 4.5 feature set.
NVIDIA says the Super Resolution model targets better temporal stability, edge quality, lighting detail and motion clarity. The company’s 6X mode is intended for demanding 4K ray-traced or path-traced games on high-refresh displays. Neither feature guarantees the same result in every game, and generated frames should not be confused with traditionally rendered frames.
What NVIDIA announced at CES 2026
DLSS is a suite rather than one upscaler. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render. Frame Generation inserts an AI-created frame between rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation inserts several generated frames. DLSS also includes Ray Reconstruction for ray-traced image reconstruction and DLAA, which applies the DLSS model at native resolution for anti-aliasing.

DLSS 4.5 updates Super Resolution and adds a dynamic approach to Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA describes 6X as a mode that can adjust its multiplier to target smooth 240-plus-FPS 4K path-traced gaming; that is a scenario-specific target, not a universal performance result. See NVIDIA’s announcement at NVIDIA’s CES 2026 GeForce announcement.

What changes in DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution?
NVIDIA says the second-generation transformer model uses a deeper understanding of scene context, motion vectors, engine pixel samples and temporal information. NVIDIA’s developer material describes approximately five times more compute than the previous model and an expanded training dataset; those are NVIDIA’s technical claims, not independent benchmark results. The stated goals are fewer ghosts, finer edges, steadier reconstruction, improved detail during motion and more reliable lighting detail. Technical background is available in NVIDIA’s developer explanation.
A more capable model can also require additional GPU work. The result varies with RTX generation, resolution, quality preset, engine, ray-tracing load and whether the system is GPU- or CPU-limited. DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution is therefore primarily an image-quality and smoothness update, not a guaranteed free frame-rate increase.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X explained
Rendered FPS is produced by the game engine. Displayed FPS combines those rendered frames with AI-generated frames. A 6X mode does not make the GPU render six complete native frames; it uses a lower number of traditionally rendered frames and inserts generated frames between them.
Generated frames can make camera motion look smoother on a high-refresh monitor, but they do not remove the need for a solid underlying frame rate. Input latency is still strongly influenced by the rendered frame rate and the game’s latency pipeline. NVIDIA Reflex can help manage that pipeline, but a larger displayed-FPS number is not automatically equivalent to the responsiveness of the same number of natively rendered frames.

Which RTX GPUs support each DLSS 4.5 feature?
| Capability | RTX 20 | RTX 30 | RTX 40 | RTX 50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution model | Yes, subject to game and app support | Yes, subject to game and app support | Yes, subject to game and app support | Yes |
| Super Resolution through NVIDIA app override | Supported RTX cards, with title and feature limitations | Supported RTX cards, with title and feature limitations | Supported RTX cards, with title and feature limitations | Supported |
| Standard DLSS Frame Generation | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| DLSS Multi Frame Generation | No | No | No | Yes |
| DLSS 4.5 Dynamic/6X Multi Frame Generation | No | No | No | Yes |
NVIDIA’s DLSS documentation distinguishes RTX-wide Super Resolution from Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell hardware. “All RTX GPUs” therefore applies to the Super Resolution upgrade, not to 6X.
How to enable the DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution model
- Install or update the NVIDIA app and your graphics driver.
- Open the NVIDIA app and select the game or application.
- Open DLSS Override → Model Presets.
- Choose Recommended, or select an available model manually. NVIDIA’s Recommended mapping assigns Model M to Performance, Model L to Ultra Performance and Model K to the remaining Super Resolution modes.
- Launch the game and enable DLSS Super Resolution in its graphics settings. Restart the game if the override is not immediately visible.
The game may continue to display its original DLSS label because the app is supplying a model override rather than changing the game’s interface. NVIDIA announced Super Resolution availability through the app on January 14, 2026, initially covering more than 400 games and applications; availability remains title-specific. Details are in NVIDIA’s availability announcement.
Native integration versus an override
Native DLSS support is integrated and tested by the developer. That allows tuning of motion vectors, camera behavior, UI handling, presets, Reflex and ray-tracing systems. An NVIDIA app override can upgrade a supported title without a developer patch, but it may lack that game-specific tuning and can conflict with modified files, replacement DLLs, other upscalers, anti-cheat systems or older engines.

If the override causes problems
- Update the NVIDIA app and graphics driver.
- Confirm that the title is supported and that Super Resolution is enabled in-game.
- Disable third-party DLL replacements or graphics mods.
- Test the game’s native DLSS option, then revert to the default model if ghosting, flicker or instability appears.
- Compare Model K, M and L at the same resolution and preset while checking motion, foliage, particles, reflections and fine geometry.
Does DLSS 4.5 improve image quality?
It can, but the answer is game- and setting-dependent. A meaningful comparison uses native rendering or DLAA as a reference and checks Quality, Balanced, Performance and Ultra Performance modes at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. Inspect thin wires, foliage, hair, particles, reflections, neon lighting, disocclusion, HUD elements, ray-traced shadows, path-traced lighting, text and distant geometry during camera movement. A static screenshot cannot establish temporal stability or latency.

- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
At 1080p, aggressive modes have fewer source pixels and may look less convincing; Quality or native rendering is a sensible baseline. DLSS also cannot correct poor engine motion data, exposure information, depth data or UI integration.
Does it increase FPS?
Super Resolution can reduce GPU rendering work, but its newer model may add compute overhead and cannot solve a CPU bottleneck. Measure average FPS, 1% lows, frame times, GPU utilization, VRAM, power, input latency and visual artifacts separately. With Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation enabled, record rendered FPS and displayed FPS independently.
Frame generation is best evaluated after establishing a stable base frame rate. At an extremely low underlying rate, generated images may look smoother while controls still feel delayed or uneven. The strongest use case is a demanding, GPU-limited 4K ray-traced or path-traced game paired with a high-refresh display.

RTX 40-series owners
You already have Super Resolution and standard Frame Generation. An RTX 50 upgrade adds Multi Frame Generation, but buying solely for 6X is difficult to justify unless you also need more native rendering, ray-tracing, memory or AI performance.
RTX 50-series owners and buyers
RTX 50 is the platform for the complete DLSS 4.5 feature set: second-generation Super Resolution, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X. The value is highest when the GPU can produce a healthy base rate and the display can use high refresh. NVIDIA’s official range is listed at the RTX 50-series product page.
- 4K path tracing: consider RTX 5080- or RTX 5090-class hardware according to budget and native performance needs. The RTX 5080 launched at a $999 MSRP and the RTX 5090 at $1,999; these are launch figures, not verified September 2026 street prices. Product information is available for the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090.
- 1440p: RTX 5070-class cards may be a more proportionate fit. NVIDIA announced launch MSRPs of $749 for RTX 5070 Ti and $549 for RTX 5070; those are not current prices.
- Lower-cost entry to RTX 50: RTX 5060-series cards provide access to Multi Frame Generation, but support does not make them guaranteed 4K path-tracing cards. NVIDIA’s launch information is at the RTX 5060 announcement.
- Competitive play: prioritize native rendered performance and measured latency over the largest displayed-FPS figure.
How DLSS 4.5 compares with alternatives
| Approach | What it does | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Native rendering | Renders at display resolution | Direct image reference, but highest cost |
| DLAA | DLSS anti-aliasing at native resolution | Improves edges without reducing render resolution |
| DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution | AI reconstruction from a lower-resolution render | Quality depends on mode, motion and integration |
| AMD FSR | Cross-hardware upscaling and frame-generation options | Results vary by version, GPU and game |
| Intel XeSS | Another vendor-neutral or cross-hardware reconstruction option | Implementation and hardware path affect quality |
| Game-native temporal AA | Engine-specific temporal anti-aliasing | Can look better or worse depending on the engine |
There is no universal winner. Compare the actual game, resolution, preset, motion conditions and latency requirements.
Bottom line
DLSS 4.5 is two upgrades under one name. Its second-generation Super Resolution model is broadly available to GeForce RTX owners through supported native integrations or NVIDIA app overrides. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X are RTX 50-series features. Existing RTX users should test the Super Resolution update before buying new hardware; buyers seeking 6X need RTX 50, and should still judge a card by native performance, VRAM, ray tracing, display resolution and price—not by generated FPS alone.
