1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDLSS 4.5 can make difficult scenes noticeably cleaner and more stable, especially at 4K Performance and Ultra Performance settings. But it is not a free, universal upgrade. RTX 20- and 30-series cards may pay a substantial performance cost for the new Super Resolution models, while DLSS 4.5’s headline Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X mode are exclusive to RTX 50-series GPUs.
The practical choice depends on three separate numbers: image quality, traditionally rendered frame rate and displayed frame rate. A higher generated-FPS counter does not automatically mean lower latency or native high-refresh responsiveness.
What DLSS 4.5 actually changes
DLSS is a collection of technologies rather than one rendering switch. Nvidia’s DLSS overview covers several components:
- Super Resolution: reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render.
- Frame Generation: inserts AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames.
- Multi Frame Generation: creates multiple generated frames for each traditionally rendered frame.
- Dynamic Multi Frame Generation: changes the generation multiplier during gameplay.
- Ray Reconstruction: uses AI reconstruction in place of traditional ray-tracing denoisers.
- DLAA: applies the Super Resolution technology at native resolution for anti-aliasing.
- Reflex: helps reduce latency and is normally paired with Frame Generation.
The “4.5” label therefore covers several model and software updates with different hardware requirements and release timing. A game can support one DLSS component without supporting all of them.

Why the image can look better
DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution uses Nvidia’s second-generation transformer model. Nvidia says the model uses five times the compute of the original transformer and a larger high-fidelity training dataset. Those are manufacturer claims, not a universal independent performance measurement, but they explain the intended trade-off: more reconstruction work in exchange for improved temporal stability and detail.
When the reconstruction has enough useful motion and depth information, the result can include finer edges, clearer movement, less ghosting and fewer shimmering artifacts. The difference is easiest to see in:
- foliage-heavy environments;
- thin cables, fences and other fine geometry;
- small distant objects;
- ray-traced or path-traced scenes;
- fast camera pans;
- fine text and static interface elements; and
- 4K Performance or Ultra Performance modes, where the internal render resolution is low.
Independent testing by PC Gamer found clearer foliage and telephone cables in STALKER 2, but also reported excessive sharpening and situations in which the older model was preferable. Do not expect the same dramatic difference in every game, particularly at DLSS Quality or native-resolution DLAA.
Models K, M and L explained
The NVIDIA App exposes three practical Super Resolution model choices:
Rank #2
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
- Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
| Model | Best use | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| K | General use and older RTX cards | The DLSS 4-era model and the sensible fallback when the newer models cost too much performance. |
| M | DLSS Performance | Primarily optimized for Performance mode. |
| L | 4K Ultra Performance | Primarily optimized for Ultra Performance mode. |
Nvidia’s Recommended setting maps Model M to Performance mode, Model L to Ultra Performance and Model K to the remaining modes. M and L can be selected elsewhere, but “newer” does not mean “always better.” If the additional reconstruction work costs too many frames or produces distracting sharpening, Model K may deliver the better overall experience.
The main catch for RTX 20- and 30-series owners
RTX 20- and 30-series GPUs do not support FP8 natively. Nvidia warns that Models M and L can therefore impose a heavier performance impact on those cards. The visual improvement may be real, but it can still be a poor trade if the game loses enough frame rate to feel less responsive.
This is the most important qualification to the “huge upgrade” headline. An RTX 50-series result should not be applied automatically to an RTX 20- or 30-series card. Your result depends on the game engine, resolution, ray-tracing settings, CPU or GPU bottleneck and the frame rate you had before the override.
Recommendation: start with Model K on RTX 20 and RTX 30. Test M or L only when the improvement is obvious and the frame-rate loss is acceptable. If the card is already struggling, reducing ray tracing or using a lighter DLSS mode may produce a better-feeling result than forcing a more expensive model.

What 6X Multi Frame Generation means
Multi Frame Generation changes the relationship between rendered and displayed frames:
- 2X: one generated frame for each traditionally rendered frame.
- 4X: three generated frames for each traditionally rendered frame.
- 6X: five generated frames for each traditionally rendered frame.
6X MFG is available on RTX 50-series GPUs in compatible titles. Nvidia claims that moving from 4X to 6X can increase 4K frame rates in path-traced games by up to 35 percent. That is a maximum manufacturer claim for a specific comparison, not a typical DLSS 4.5 performance increase across all games.
The limitation is fundamental: generated frames do not replace traditionally rendered simulation frames. If a game is rendering at 20–30 FPS, MFG can make motion look smoother, but controls still feel much closer to the base frame rate. CPU bottlenecks, simulation limits and poor frame pacing are not solved by displaying more AI-generated images.
Tom’s Guide’s testing likewise cautioned that smoother output should not be confused with genuinely high-refresh responsiveness. Reflex can reduce the responsiveness impact of Frame Generation, but it cannot make generated frames equivalent to native rendered frames.

Dynamic MFG is adaptive—but has a settings catch
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation changes its multiplier in real time to balance smoothness, image quality and responsiveness. You can target your display’s maximum refresh rate or enter a custom target.
Configure it in the NVIDIA App:
- Open NVIDIA App → Graphics.
- Select the game or global profile.
- Open DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode.
- Choose Dynamic.
- Select Max refresh rate or Custom.
Nvidia says Dynamic mode is incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. If you rely on either for consistent pacing, use Fixed mode, select a multiplier, or return to Use 3D app setting and configure ordinary Frame Generation in the game.
Dynamic MFG is most compelling on a high-refresh display, such as a 1440p high-refresh panel or 4K 240Hz monitor. A 60Hz screen cannot show the full benefit of a mode targeting much higher output.
DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction is a separate feature
Ray Reconstruction should not be confused with Super Resolution. It is designed for ray-traced and path-traced scenes, replacing traditional hand-tuned denoisers with an AI reconstruction model. Nvidia says the new model uses expanded training data and more compute capability while targeting performance similar to the previous model.

Nvidia announced the feature for an August 2026 rollout and said it could enhance 27 games at the time of the announcement. However, the announcement page’s availability language has not been perfectly consistent, so support should be confirmed in the current NVIDIA App and in the individual game rather than assumed from the DLSS 4.5 label. A game may offer Super Resolution without offering the new Ray Reconstruction model.

Requirements
- An updated NVIDIA App.
- A game or application that already supports DLSS.
- A compatible GeForce RTX GPU.
- For Dynamic MFG and 6X, Nvidia specified driver 595.97 WHQL or newer for the March 31, 2026 release; check the current driver requirement before installing.
Super Resolution override
- Open the NVIDIA App.
- Go to Graphics.
- Select the game, or use the global settings.
- Find DLSS Override – Model Preset.
- Choose Recommended, Model K, Model M or Model L.
- Launch the game and compare the result with its normal DLSS setting.
To check the active model, open Alt+Z → Statistics → Statistics View → DLSS. If the game does not apply the override immediately, restart it. If performance drops, switch to Model K or disable the override. If sharpening is distracting, compare the models at the same DLSS mode rather than judging only one preset.
Which setting should you use?
| Hardware or use case | Start here | Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 50 at 4K Performance | Model M | Model K |
| RTX 50 at 4K Ultra Performance | Model L | Model K |
| RTX 40 | Recommended; compare M/L with K | Model K |
| RTX 30 | Model K | M/L only if performance remains acceptable |
| RTX 20 | Model K | The game’s standard DLSS setting or native rendering |
| RTX 50 with a 240Hz display | Dynamic MFG | Fixed multiplier |
| Competitive games | Standard DLSS plus Reflex and a strong base FPS | Avoid MFG if latency or artifacts are noticeable |
What to measure before deciding
Do not judge DLSS 4.5 from the displayed FPS number alone. Compare the same scene and record:
- native or standard DLSS frame rate;
- DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution frame rate;
- base rendered FPS before Frame Generation;
- displayed FPS with 2X, 4X or 6X;
- frame-time consistency;
- input latency, if you can measure it;
- power draw and VRAM use; and
- visible ghosting, shimmering, sharpening, UI errors and thin-geometry artifacts.
Low-VRAM cards may also become less stable with Frame Generation because generated frames require additional resources. This is especially worth testing on 8GB cards rather than assuming a universal outcome.

The verdict
DLSS 4.5 is a meaningful upgrade for image quality when the game, mode and GPU are a good match. RTX 40- and 50-series owners should try it in supported games, especially at demanding 4K Performance or Ultra Performance settings. RTX 50 owners also gain the distinctive Dynamic MFG and 6X options, provided their base frame rate and display justify them.
RTX 20- and 30-series owners should be more cautious. Start with Model K, because Models M and L can cost more performance without delivering a worthwhile overall improvement. And nobody should buy a new GPU solely because a higher generated-FPS number sounds like native performance. Choose hardware based on base FPS, resolution, ray tracing, VRAM, latency and display refresh rate; treat DLSS 4.5 as a powerful tool, not a guarantee.
