NVIDIA’s Game Ready Driver 581.08, released on August 19, 2025, introduced global DLSS override controls in the NVIDIA App. They let compatible games use newer DLSS models, scaling modes and, on GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards, Multi Frame Generation in some games that already support conventional Frame Generation.
This is not a universal DLSS patch. The game must already have a compatible DLSS implementation, the selected feature must match your GPU, and results can vary by engine, API and title. Later updates expanded the system with DLSS 4.5 model presets and additional Multi Frame Generation options.
First, a date and version correction
The driver associated with NVIDIA’s global DLSS override announcement was GeForce Game Ready Driver 581.08, released on August 19, 2025. It should not be described as NVIDIA’s current driver indefinitely. NVIDIA’s driver page later listed GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.62, released June 16, 2026, and newer releases may exist after that date.

What NVIDIA’s DLSS override actually does
DLSS overrides sit between a game’s native DLSS implementation and the graphics driver. They can select compatible NVIDIA AI models or options without waiting for the developer to publish a new game update.
- Native DLSS: The developer integrates DLSS and controls how the game supplies motion vectors, depth data, UI information and other inputs.
- NVIDIA App override: NVIDIA applies a supported driver-level setting or newer model to an existing implementation.
- Global override: One choice applies to compatible detected games and future compatible titles.
- Per-game override: One game can use a different setting from the global default.
The global controls are under NVIDIA App > Graphics > Global Settings. Individual titles remain under Graphics > Program Settings > Driver Settings. A per-game setting can take precedence over the global choice, so check both locations if a change does not appear to work.
Which DLSS options are available?
| Option | What it does | Hardware and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS Multi Frame Generation Override | Attempts to add Multi Frame Generation to a game that already supports conventional Frame Generation. | GeForce RTX 50-series only; Frame Generation must be enabled in the game. |
| DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade | Uses a newer Frame Generation model in compatible games. | RTX 40 and RTX 50 series, subject to title compatibility; Frame Generation must already be active. |
| DLSS Transformer Model Upgrade | Uses newer transformer-based models for compatible Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction or DLAA implementations. | Available across RTX generations where the game and feature are compatible. |
| DLAA and Ultra Performance | Exposes modes that a game may not list natively. | Requires an existing compatible DLSS Super Resolution implementation. |
| Custom Super Resolution scaling | Lets you select a preset or manually choose an input-resolution scale. | The documented range is 33% to 100%. |
| DLSS Override – Model Presets | Provides later DLSS 4.5 presets, including NVIDIA’s Recommended option. | Available through the NVIDIA App for compatible GeForce RTX systems. |
NVIDIA identifies common scaling references as Quality at 67%, Performance at 50%, Ultra Performance at 33% and DLAA at 100%. These percentages describe the internally rendered input resolution, not an equivalent promise of image quality or performance in every game.

DLSS Frame Generation versus Multi Frame Generation
Traditional DLSS Frame Generation inserts one AI-generated frame between conventionally rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation can create multiple generated frames for each traditionally rendered frame.
That distinction matters because Multi Frame Generation is not simply a driver switch for every RTX card. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 implementation targeted RTX 50-series hardware for Multi Frame Generation. RTX 40-series users can benefit from newer Super Resolution and some Frame Generation model upgrades, but they do not generally gain RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation through this override.
DLSS 4.5 later expanded the feature set with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and higher multipliers, including 5X and 6X modes on supported RTX 50-series configurations. NVIDIA’s stated multiplier describes generated-frame output; it does not mean the game simulates input, runs game logic or reduces latency at the same rate.

GPU compatibility at a glance
- RTX 20 and RTX 30: Can use relevant Super Resolution, DLAA and transformer-model options where supported. A newer model may require additional GPU resources, so image quality and performance should be checked rather than assumed.
- RTX 40: Can use newer Super Resolution and compatible Frame Generation model upgrades. RTX 40 cards should not be treated as having the RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation feature.
- RTX 50: Supports the broadest DLSS 4 and DLSS 4.5 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and later supported modes. The game still needs a compatible implementation.
A driver cannot turn an RTX 20-, 30- or 40-series card into an RTX 50-series GPU. Nor does the override remove the latency trade-off associated with generated frames or fix a CPU bottleneck.
How to enable a DLSS override
- Update the driver. Install the current compatible GeForce Game Ready or Studio Driver. The original DLSS 4 rollout required driver 572.16 or newer; specified DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Generation upgrades require driver 595.97 WHQL or newer.
- Install or update the NVIDIA App. The original support documentation specified NVIDIA App 11.0.2.312 or newer. The current app is preferable to an old version.
- Open NVIDIA App > Graphics.
- Choose Global Settings to set a default for compatible games, or choose Program Settings to configure one title.
- Select the game. If it is not detected, use the app’s game-management controls where available, but detection alone does not guarantee compatibility.
- Scroll to Driver Settings. Choose the applicable DLSS override, such as Frame Generation Model Upgrade, Transformer Model Upgrade or DLSS Override – Model Presets.
- Restart the game. Close and relaunch it after changing the setting. Some games may also require a graphics-settings refresh.
- Verify the result. Use the NVIDIA overlay statistics panel, where supported, to check whether the override is active.
For DLSS 4.5 fixed-multiplier or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation options, NVIDIA provides separate instructions for supported configurations in its fixed-multiplier and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation support pages. Some features may require beta or experimental NVIDIA App options.
Supported games: useful, but not universal
NVIDIA’s compatibility list changes as it tests and adds titles. Its August 2025 announcement said it had verified Multi Frame Generation support in more than 100 games and applications and had updated or added overrides for 61 games and apps in recent weeks. Examples included Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Avowed, FINAL FANTASY XVI, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, Silent Hill 2, The First Descendant and Until Dawn.

Those figures and examples are historical snapshots, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. In January 2026, NVIDIA said more than 250 games and apps supported DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation. That broader number should not be read as the exact number eligible for every driver override.
Compatibility depends on the game’s current version, engine, rendering API, anti-cheat behavior and the way its existing DLSS implementation supplies required data. NVIDIA’s driver documentation notes that games without the necessary NVIDIA API support may not expose DLSS options.
How to judge whether an override is worthwhile
Compare the override with the game’s native setting rather than judging only the largest FPS number. Generated frames can raise displayed FPS while leaving the underlying rendered FPS and input response much closer to the original value.

- Test a visually complex area with foliage, hair, particles and distant geometry.
- Pan the camera slowly and quickly to look for ghosting, shimmer and unstable fine detail.
- Check HUD-heavy scenes for UI trails, doubled elements or incorrect compositing.
- Compare native DLSS, the game’s default setting and the override at the same resolution.
- Check rendered FPS, displayed FPS, frame-time consistency and input latency separately.
- In competitive games, prioritize clarity and responsiveness over a higher generated-frame count.
A newer transformer model may improve temporal stability in one title but cost additional GPU time in another. If a game is CPU-limited, generated frames will not repair the underlying simulation bottleneck.
If the override option is missing
- The title is unsupported or not detected: NVIDIA verifies games individually, and not every DLSS title qualifies.
- The required feature is disabled: Frame Generation overrides require Frame Generation to be enabled in the game.
- The game lacks the necessary implementation: An override cannot add DLSS to a game that does not already provide a compatible DLSS path.
- The driver or app is too old: Update both components rather than updating only the driver.
- The GPU is incompatible: RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation is distinct from RTX 40-series Frame Generation model upgrades.
- The game has not restarted: Relaunch it after changing the setting.
- A per-game setting overrides the global setting: Inspect Graphics > Program Settings and remove or change the title-specific choice.
- A laptop uses an OEM configuration: Manufacturer drivers, hybrid graphics and vendor customizations can affect detection and available controls.
- The game’s engine, API or anti-cheat conflicts with the feature: There may be no supported workaround through the NVIDIA App.
How to recover from artifacts or instability
Overrides do not permanently rewrite the game or its save files, but an incompatible model or scaling setting can produce ghosting, flickering, UI artifacts, incorrect motion vectors, crashes or worse image quality.
- Set the override to Off or Application-controlled.
- Remove any conflicting per-game override.
- Restart the game.
- If the issue continues, disable Frame Generation and test native DLSS Super Resolution alone.
- Only consider reinstalling or rolling back the driver if the problem affects multiple games and persists after all overrides are disabled.
What this feature does not do
NVIDIA’s override system does not add DLSS to every game, guarantee better image quality in every scene, replace a developer-integrated DLSS update or make unsupported hardware eligible for Multi Frame Generation. It also does not eliminate generated-frame latency, increase the game’s underlying CPU simulation rate or guarantee that an advertised 4X, 5X or 6X output multiplier feels like the same multiple in responsiveness.

Verdict
The DLSS override system is most useful as a per-game tuning tool for older or lightly maintained DLSS titles. RTX 20-, 30- and 40-series owners can benefit from compatible Super Resolution, DLAA and model upgrades, while RTX 50-series owners get access to the most advanced Multi Frame Generation options.
Enable it when a game already supports DLSS but lacks a newer model or desired mode, then compare it with the native implementation. Treat the global setting as a convenient default—not as proof that every compatible game will look or perform better.
