You do not need an RTX 50-series card just to try the demo: Nvidia listed a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti as its minimum GPU. The 50-series distinction is access to features such as DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, not basic access to RTX Remix or the demo.
What Nvidia announced—and when
The March 2025 announcement brought together three related things: the official release of RTX Remix after its beta period, support for DLSS 4 features including Multi Frame Generation in Remix projects, and the playable Half-Life 2 RTX demo. Nvidia said the demo became available on March 18, 2025, for owners of Half-Life 2 through Steam. Nvidia’s launch announcement
This was a lead-in to GDC 2025, not a GDC 2026 launch. Nvidia’s separate GDC 2026 announcements discussed DLSS 4.5 and later RTX Remix developments; they should not be confused with the demo’s original release.
What the Half-Life 2 RTX demo includes
A community-made remaster preview
Half-Life 2 RTX is a community-made remaster project by Orbifold Studios, not a new Valve-produced edition. Its artists and developers have rebuilt or enhanced materials, textures, models, lighting and other visual elements using RTX Remix. Nvidia’s launch material identified Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt in the playable demo; its broader campaign also promotes remastered work in locations including the Citadel. That does not mean the demo contains the complete remaster: it is a preview of selected areas. Nvidia’s launch coverage credits Orbifold Studios, and the official campaign page describes the project’s visual features.

What “full ray tracing” means
Nvidia describes the demo as using full ray tracing. In practical terms, it applies ray-traced lighting throughout much more of the scene than a game that adds only a specific effect, such as a ray-traced reflection or shadow. Rebuilt materials and lighting change how surfaces respond to light, while the ray-traced workload is far heavier than the original Half-Life 2 rendering. The phrase is Nvidia’s description of the demo’s rendering approach; it does not establish that every visual element is produced by conventional path tracing.
What RTX 50-series features add
DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation
Multi Frame Generation uses AI to generate additional displayed frames between traditionally rendered frames. Nvidia introduced the feature with DLSS 4 and the RTX 50-series. It can make motion appear smoother, but generated frames are not the same as rendering an equivalent number of frames from the game itself. The underlying rendered frame rate, responsiveness, image quality and frame pacing still matter.
Other rendering technologies
DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render; Ray Reconstruction is a separate DLSS technology intended to improve ray-traced image reconstruction. Neither is another name for Multi Frame Generation. Nvidia also identifies RTX Neural Radiance Cache in the demo: it uses neural techniques to help approximate indirect lighting in ray-traced scenes. Neural shaders apply neural methods to parts of the rendering pipeline, rather than simply scaling an image or inserting frames. Nvidia’s neural-rendering announcement provides further context.
The demo also includes Nvidia Reflex, a latency-reduction technology relevant to responsiveness. Reflex does not make generated frames equivalent to natively rendered frames or remove the need to judge input response for yourself. These technologies address different parts of rendering and performance; enabling one does not guarantee that every other bottleneck disappears.

Nvidia reported an average performance multiplier of 10.2× at 4K Ultra, reaching 265 frames per second on an RTX 5090 with DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation enabled. This is Nvidia’s result for that specified card, resolution, preset and feature configuration—not an independent benchmark, a native-rendering result, or a forecast for every RTX 50-series GPU. The figure should not be used to estimate performance on an RTX 5060, 5070 or another system without comparable testing. Nvidia’s announcement

When judging a frame-generation result, look beyond the displayed FPS counter. A high output frame rate can coexist with a lower base-rendered rate, and smoothness, latency and frame pacing can vary with settings and hardware. Try the game at your target resolution and assess responsiveness as well as visual fluidity.
Do you need an RTX 50-series GPU?
No. Nvidia’s minimum listed GPU for the demo was a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. That minimum indicates the stated entry point, not a promise of a particular resolution, preset or frame rate. RTX 50-series hardware is needed for the RTX 50-exclusive Multi Frame Generation feature Nvidia highlights; it is not a prerequisite for playing the demo. Nvidia also distinguishes between making a Remix mod and playing one that is already complete.
| Activity | Requirement or qualification |
|---|---|
| Play the Half-Life 2 RTX demo | Nvidia’s listed minimum GPU: GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. This does not specify a recommended preset or performance level. Nvidia’s DLSS 4 announcement |
| Use DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation | GeForce RTX 50-series hardware, as the RTX 50-series feature highlighted for this demo. |
| Create RTX Remix mods | Nvidia says a GeForce RTX GPU is required. |
| Play a completed RTX Remix mod | Nvidia says the system must support Vulkan ray tracing; the experience depends on the mod and hardware. |
The compatibility statements above come from Nvidia’s RTX Remix and demo announcement. They do not establish support for every non-Nvidia GPU or guarantee that every classic game can be remastered successfully.

- Own Half-Life 2 on Steam. Nvidia described the demo as free for owners of the game.
- Open the official Half-Life 2 RTX campaign page or find the demo through Steam, then use the available download entry.
- Install the demo and check that your GPU meets the listed minimum. The minimum does not promise that demanding settings will run smoothly.
- If the game or Nvidia App reports a compatibility problem, check for a current Nvidia driver and follow the error message before troubleshooting further.
Because availability and store details can change, check the current Steam listing and campaign page when downloading. Nvidia’s ownership condition is not the same as a claim that the demo is free to every Steam user.
How RTX Remix mod creation works
Nvidia directs creators to RTX Remix from the Home screen of the Nvidia App or its RTX Remix announcement. Remix is a toolkit and runtime for modding compatible classic PC games, not an automatic remaster button.

Orbifold Studios’ work involved artist-created textures with height maps and physically based materials, rebuilt models, level work in Hammer, and later import into RTX Remix. AI-assisted asset tools can help with parts of that pipeline, but consistency, geometry, lighting, compatibility and testing remain real production work. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you upgrade for this demo?
If you already have an RTX 30-series card
If your card meets the RTX 3060 Ti minimum, you can try the demo without upgrading solely to access it. You will not get RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation, and your results will depend on the card, resolution and settings. Treat the stated minimum as a launchability threshold, not a performance recommendation.
If you have an RTX 40-series card
An upgrade is not automatically justified by this demo. The specific dividing line in Nvidia’s announcement is RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation; weigh that feature against your existing card’s native rendering performance and the rest of your game library rather than equating generated FPS with a like-for-like increase in rendered frames.
If you are considering an RTX 50-series card
The features are most relevant if you already want high-refresh or high-resolution ray-traced gaming and value Multi Frame Generation. The RTX 5090 result is not a substitute for performance data on lower-tier models. Consider your target resolution, VRAM needs, power supply, case space and other games before buying. Nvidia’s published figures are launch-price signals, not current retail quotes: the RTX 50-series launch announcement listed launch MSRPs of $1,999 for the RTX 5090, $999 for the RTX 5080, $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti and $549 for the RTX 5070. Its RTX 5060 family announcement listed the RTX 5060 Ti starting at $379 for 8GB and $429 for 16GB; the RTX 5060 announcement listed a $299 launch price. These historical prices do not establish current availability or street pricing.
If you do not have an RTX card
The supplied compatibility statements specify RTX hardware for Remix creation and ray-tracing capability for completed Remix projects, but they do not verify a particular AMD or Intel configuration for this demo. Check the current game listing and platform requirements rather than assuming compatibility from general hardware branding.
What changed after the 2025 launch
Nvidia’s GDC 2026 announcements covered DLSS 4.5 and later RTX Remix updates, and its DLSS 4.5 announcement belongs to that later product context. Those updates do not change the date or original scope of the Half-Life 2 RTX demo launch. The practical distinction remains: RTX 50-series features can add rendering options, while the demo’s listed minimum and RTX Remix compatibility are not 50-series-only requirements.
