“ This application failed to start because nview.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.” You may instead see “The program can’t start because nview.dll is missing from your computer,” “Error loading nview.dll,” or “nview.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
nview.dll is a genuine NVIDIA file, not a Windows system DLL. It belongs to NVIDIA nView Desktop and Window Manager, an older desktop and multi-monitor management component used mainly with professional Quadro and NVS graphics products.
The safest fix is to reinstall the correct NVIDIA display driver or matching nView package for your graphics card and Windows version. If you deliberately removed nView, the error may come from a stale startup entry instead. In that case, remove or disable the obsolete NVIDIA startup command rather than downloading the DLL separately.
Do not copy nview.dll into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application folder. Do not register it with regsvr32 unless official documentation for a specific application says registration is required. nView is a driver and application hook library, not normally a COM component.

What is nview.dll?
nview.dll is the NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager hook library. Its publisher is NVIDIA Corporation, and its internal description is NVIDIA nView Desktop and Window Manager 30.87.
nView provided desktop-management features such as multi-monitor configuration and window-management behavior. NVIDIA designed it for professional Quadro and NVS graphics products. It historically appeared inside NVIDIA display-driver packages and in separate nView installers.
It is not supplied by:
- Microsoft Windows
- Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- A general-purpose Windows feature
NVIDIA documentation also identifies a separate nView64.dll. The historical nview.dll file is commonly 32-bit, even when it is installed on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit utility can require a 32-bit DLL on a 64-bit computer, so do not replace it with an unrelated 64-bit file.
Some historical records list these 32-bit builds:
| Version | Approximate recorded size |
|---|---|
| 6.14.10.14977 | 1.82 MB |
| 6.14.10.12524 | 1.55 MB |
| 6.14.10.6177 | 1.3 MB |
These records do not prove that every installation should contain one of these exact versions. Driver generations and installation paths differ.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
- An NVIDIA driver or nView installation is incomplete.
- A driver update, rollback, cleanup, or uninstall removed the file while leaving a startup reference.
- An incompatible package was installed for the wrong GPU, Windows version, or application architecture.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A damaged Windows installation is causing broader application failures.
- A file named
nview.dllexists in an unexpected location and is not an authentic NVIDIA component.
The timing is useful. If the message started immediately after changing the graphics driver, repair the NVIDIA installation first. If it appears after you removed old NVIDIA software, look for a stale startup entry.
First identify what is trying to load the file
Before repairing Windows, determine whether the message comes from a startup command, an NVIDIA component, or a particular application.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an NVIDIA, nView,
nwiz.exe, orrundll32.exeentry. - Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location if available.
- Note the full command or location before changing it.
Disable only an entry that clearly refers to obsolete NVIDIA nView software. Do not disable every NVIDIA item automatically, because some entries belong to the active graphics driver or control panel.
Restart Windows. If the error disappears and your display works normally, the problem was probably a stale startup reference. If the error continues, re-enable the entry and proceed with the NVIDIA repair.

A game launcher’s Verify or Repair feature helps only if that game actually installed the NVIDIA component. It cannot restore a missing driver file that belongs to Windows’ NVIDIA installation.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct NVIDIA driver or nView package
This is the most likely solution when the file was removed during a driver update, uninstall, or failed installation.
Find your graphics hardware
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact NVIDIA model.
- Double-click the adapter and open the Driver tab.
- Record the driver provider and version if Windows still reports them.
If the adapter is listed as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the NVIDIA driver is missing or not active. Use the exact model shown under Display adapters, not a guessed product name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteObtain the package from NVIDIA
Use NVIDIA’s official driver or legacy nView download area. Match all of these:
- Exact GPU model
- Windows version
- 32-bit or 64-bit Windows architecture
- Quadro or NVS product family where applicable
- Driver branch required by the legacy nView package
NVIDIA’s legacy nView 149.77 package specifically supports 64-bit Windows 7 and Windows 10 and requires NVIDIA driver version 390.65 or newer. That does not mean it is a universal Windows 11 solution. Newer systems may not support legacy nView.
For older Quadro and NVS systems, use the official matching nView package rather than a loose DLL archive. NVIDIA’s current successor is RTX Desktop Manager, formerly Quadro View, but it is limited to supported professional NVIDIA hardware and Windows 10. It is not a universal replacement for nView or a solution for every GeForce computer.
Perform a clean installation
- Download the installer from NVIDIA.
- Close open applications.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) when offered.
- Select Perform a clean installation if the option appears.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
A clean installation resets NVIDIA settings and replaces files from the selected driver package. After restarting, launch the program that produced the error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A successful repair usually means the error no longer appears and the NVIDIA adapter is correctly identified in Device Manager. If the installer refuses the package, stop rather than forcing it. Recheck the GPU model, Windows architecture, and whether that package supports the system.
Manually hunting through old driver branches can be difficult, especially when several NVIDIA components are installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or missing drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It is not required, and the official NVIDIA installer remains the preferred source for a specific legacy nView package.
Fix 2: Remove a stale NVIDIA startup reference
Use this fix when nView was intentionally uninstalled or when the NVIDIA driver works normally but Windows reports the missing file at every startup.

Remove the obsolete program first
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for nView, NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager, or an obsolete NVIDIA display component.
- Select the matching entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, open Settings, select Apps, then Apps & features.
If the entry is not listed, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for an NVIDIA nView or related legacy component.
- Uninstall only the component you recognize.
Disable the remaining startup command
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable the confirmed nView or obsolete NVIDIA entry.
- Restart the computer.
Also check Task Scheduler:
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names and actions clearly refer to removed nView software.
- Right-click a confirmed obsolete task and choose Disable.
Do not delete registry values or scheduled tasks merely because their names contain “NVIDIA.” Record the command first and confirm that it points to removed nView software. If the error continues, identify the executable named in the message before making more changes.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected NVIDIA file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nview.dllor an NVIDIA installer. - Read the detection details and file path.
Restore the file only when you can verify that it came from an official NVIDIA installation and the detection is clearly a false positive. Otherwise, leave it quarantined, run a malware scan, and reinstall the NVIDIA package from the official source.
A copy of nview.dll in a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, or an unexpected application folder deserves additional investigation. The filename alone does not prove that the file is safe.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party NVIDIA DLL, so use them as a secondary repair when other Windows programs also fail or when SFC reports system corruption.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test the application again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands again only if Microsoft’s results indicate that another pass is appropriate. Persistent Windows corruption may require System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues; its free scan shows detected problems, while repair through the full version is optional. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the NVIDIA component when nview.dll itself is missing.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a driver update or software removal and a restore point exists.

- Press the Windows key and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point matches the suspected change.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
System Restore does not replace a correct NVIDIA driver strategy. Afterward, install a compatible official driver if the display driver remains damaged.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
You may find instructions telling you to run:
regsvr32 nview.dll
That is generally the wrong repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. NVIDIA’s nView hook library is not normally registered that way.
If Windows reports:
nview.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
that confirms the registration command is inappropriate. It does not mean registration is missing.
Registering an arbitrary DLL cannot repair a missing driver installation, fix an incompatible architecture, or recreate the files and services supplied by NVIDIA’s installer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading nview.dll separately is unsafe
Avoid DLL download websites and individual files shared in forums or file repositories. A separately downloaded file can be:
- Modified or malware-infected
- The wrong historical version
- The wrong architecture
- Intended for another NVIDIA product
- Incompatible with the installed driver
- Placed in a directory where it creates DLL search-order problems
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, a game directory, or an application directory may hide one message while creating another. The correct source is the original NVIDIA driver or nView installer. If a specific game or program supplied the component, repair or reinstall that program through its official installer.
Understanding 32-bit and 64-bit files
The presence of 64-bit Windows does not prove that every required DLL must be 64-bit. Older NVIDIA software could use a 32-bit nview.dll alongside a separate nView64.dll.
Choose the package according to:
- The NVIDIA GPU model
- The Windows architecture
- The application or utility requesting the file
- The driver and nView generation
Never rename nView64.dll to nview.dll, and never use a 64-bit replacement for a 32-bit application.

When to investigate malware
Malware is not the default explanation for a missing NVIDIA file, especially when the error follows a driver change. Investigate further when:
- The file is located outside an NVIDIA installation directory
- Its digital signature is missing or invalid
- The publisher is not NVIDIA Corporation
- Multiple security alerts appear
- Unknown programs launch with the file
- The error returns after an official reinstall
Run a full scan with Windows Security. If the file appears in an unexpected location, do not add an antivirus exclusion merely to make the error disappear.

Frequently asked questions
Is nview.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an NVIDIA nView component and is not part of the standard Windows installation.
Is nview.dll safe?
A genuine copy supplied by an NVIDIA installer can be legitimate. The filename alone is not proof of authenticity. Check its path, publisher, digital signature, and relationship to the installed NVIDIA package.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the normal fix. nview.dll is an NVIDIA driver and desktop-management component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
Can I fix it by reinstalling my game?
Only if that game actually installed or owns the NVIDIA component. Otherwise, repair the NVIDIA driver or nView package. A launcher’s file verification cannot repair a missing system-wide NVIDIA installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the error return at every startup?
A stale rundll32.exe, nwiz.exe, or NVIDIA startup command may still reference nView after the software was removed. Inspect Startup apps and Task Scheduler, then disable only the confirmed obsolete entry.
Does RTX Desktop Manager replace nView?
It is NVIDIA’s modern successor, but it is not universal. NVIDIA limits it to supported professional hardware and Windows 10. It should not be treated as a replacement for every nView installation or every GeForce system.
When should I use SFC and DISM?
Use them when other Windows components also behave incorrectly or when Windows reports corruption. They are not the primary way to restore a missing third-party NVIDIA DLL.
What if none of these fixes works?
Identify the exact executable producing the message, verify the NVIDIA package matches the GPU and Windows architecture, and check whether the error is from a stale startup command. If the official installer still fails, uninstall the obsolete NVIDIA component through Installed apps or Programs and Features, restart, and install the correct supported driver package again.
