“The program can’t start because nvrshu.dll is missing from your computer.” The nvrshu.dll error usually points to an old NVIDIA driver component or legacy application, not a missing Windows runtime.
Do not download a random copy of nvrshu.dll and place it in System32. The file is a legacy 32-bit NVIDIA language-resource DLL, and the correct repair depends on which executable is requesting it.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The error appears when launching an NVIDIA utility or after a driver change: reinstall the correct NVIDIA driver with a clean installation.
- The error appears when launching one old game or application: repair or reinstall that application first.
- The message appears every time Windows starts: find the obsolete startup item, scheduled task, shortcut, or service requesting the file.
- Windows Security shows that the file was quarantined: verify its origin before restoring anything. Reinstalling the trusted NVIDIA package is safer.
- Several DLL errors appeared after manually copying files: stop copying files and repair the complete application or driver package.
- The problem began immediately after installing a driver or program: use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists.
- Many Windows components are failing, not just this DLL: run DISM and SFC. These repair protected Windows files and normally will not recreate a third-party NVIDIA DLL.
What nvrshu.dll is
nvrshu.dll is described as the NVIDIA Hungarian language resource library. Public metadata associates it with NVIDIA Corporation and the NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, version 29.42.

That package belongs to the Windows 2000 and Windows XP era. The DLL is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component, Microsoft Visual C++ file, DirectX file, or .NET file. There is no established reason to expect a current Windows installation to contain it.
The name also does not prove that every copy came from driver version 29.42. NVIDIA distributed related language resources in different driver packages, and file details can differ between releases. The historical package may also be incompatible with current hardware and Windows versions.
On a modern PC, the more useful question is not “Where can I download this DLL?” It is “Which program is still trying to load an obsolete NVIDIA component?”
What the error means
Windows displays a missing-DLL message when an executable cannot load a required library from its application folder or from the normal DLL search locations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You may see wording such as:
- “This application failed to start because nvrshu.dll was not found.”
- “The file nvrshu.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: nvrshu.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading nvrshu.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because nvrshu.dll is missing from your computer.”
The wording varies by Windows version and application. Also, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that nvrshu.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL may be missing, the wrong architecture may be installed, or the application may be using an obsolete path.
Identify the program requesting the file
Do this before copying or replacing anything.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. Some startup dialogs identify the executable or NVIDIA utility. If the message appears while opening a particular game or program, that application is the first thing to repair.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that triggers the message.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Note the application folder.
- Open that folder in File Explorer and search for
nvrshu.dll.
If the DLL is expected by a legacy application, it may belong in that application’s own folder rather than in a Windows system directory.
Check startup apps
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old NVIDIA utility or an entry whose publisher is missing.
- Right-click the entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- Disable the entry temporarily if the associated software is no longer needed.
Disabling a startup entry only prevents it from launching. It does not repair the underlying program, so uninstall obsolete software through Windows afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck Event Viewer
- Press Win+X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the dialog appeared.
- Check the General and Details tabs for the application name or executable path.
If the requester remains unclear, the application’s own logs or Process Monitor can identify the exact executable and path attempting to load the DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the correct first fix when one old game or program produces the error.
Repair an installed application
- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
Windows does not provide Advanced options or Repair for every desktop program. Microsoft documents the process on its application repair support page.
For a classic desktop program, use this route instead:
- Press Win+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Reinstall a game or legacy program
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up saved games or application data.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from its original, trusted installer.
- Use its built-in Repair, Verify files, or equivalent feature if available.
- Start the program before changing system folders.
A legacy application may require a bundled NVIDIA component that is not meant to be installed globally. A current NVIDIA driver cannot be expected to contain every file from an old Windows XP-era package.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the application starts without the nvrshu.dll message. If a different DLL error appears, do not download that file immediately. Several missing-DLL messages in sequence usually indicate an incomplete installation or a missing dependency set. Reinstall the whole application instead.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching NVIDIA driver
Use this fix when the error names an NVIDIA utility, began after a graphics-driver change, or appears on a system that still uses old NVIDIA software.
Install the current driver for a modern PC
- Identify the graphics card:
- Press Win+X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the NVIDIA model.
- Confirm the Windows edition and architecture:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Check System type.
- Download the driver through NVIDIA’s official driver-selection page.
- Start the installer.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) when offered.
- Select Perform a clean installation.
- Continue through the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program that reported the error.
A clean installation resets old NVIDIA settings and removes prior driver-related files. It does not guarantee that a modern package will contain nvrshu.dll; the important result is whether the current driver and the application now match.
Install a historical driver only on a genuinely compatible system
NVIDIA’s archived Windows XP/2000 driver page identifies version 29.42 as a WHQL-certified historical package associated with this file. Use that archive only when you are maintaining an appropriate legacy machine and have confirmed that the hardware, operating system, and application require it.
Do not install an old XP/2000 driver on Windows 10 or Windows 11 simply because its package name appears in file metadata. Modern Windows and graphics hardware may reject it or become less stable.

If you are unsure which installed driver is appropriate, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or mismatched drivers instead of making you hunt through multiple hardware entries; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and NVIDIA’s official driver package remains the preferred source for a known GPU.
Roll back a recently changed driver
If the error started immediately after a driver update:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the NVIDIA graphics device.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, uninstall the display device and reinstall the known-compatible package from NVIDIA. Avoid third-party driver repositories.
How to tell whether this worked
The driver repair worked if the NVIDIA utility or application starts normally, Device Manager shows the graphics device without a warning icon, and the error does not return after a restart.
If the message continues, the requester may be an old startup item rather than the active graphics driver. Return to the identification steps instead of repeatedly reinstalling current drivers.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a DLL. That does not prove the file was safe.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
nvrshu.dll. - Check the file path, detection name, and source.
- Compare the path with the folder used by a verified NVIDIA installer.
Restore the file only when you can confirm that it came from a trusted NVIDIA package and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a threat can expose the device. If the provenance is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver or application from its official installer.
After reinstalling, update Windows Security and run a scan. A DLL that repeatedly returns from an unknown location should be treated as suspicious rather than restored.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows components are also damaged, applications fail broadly, or system corruption began after a storage or update problem. They are secondary for nvrshu.dll because this file is not established as a Windows-protected component.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files against that store. Microsoft provides the command details in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete successfully but nvrshu.dll is still missing, that is expected: these tools normally do not restore a third-party NVIDIA resource DLL.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC would only leave you guessing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues; its free scan shows detected problems, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and an application-specific missing DLL still requires repairing or reinstalling that application.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, application removal, or system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft explains this process in its System Restore documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove a recently installed driver or application. If the error returns afterward, repair the underlying application or install the correct NVIDIA package rather than restoring the same broken software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not copy nvrshu.dll into System32 and SysWOW64
Manual DLL replacement is a poor fit for this file.
- A random download may contain malware.
- The file may come from the wrong NVIDIA driver generation.
- A 32-bit DLL may be incompatible with a 64-bit executable.
- A 64-bit Windows installation can still run 32-bit applications, which may need a 32-bit library in the application’s own location.
System32andSysWOW64are not interchangeable.- Copying the file may hide the original broken installation without fixing its dependencies or paths.
Do not copy an arbitrary DLL into both directories. That can create additional conflicts and makes later driver repairs harder to diagnose.
Do not use regsvr32 for this language resource
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
A language-resource DLL such as nvrshu.dll is not normally registered that way. Running:
regsvr32 nvrshu.dll
is therefore unlikely to help. An error stating that an entry point is missing is evidence that registration does not apply, not a reason to download another copy. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

If the error appears at every boot
A boot-time message with no visible NVIDIA software usually means an orphaned startup entry, scheduled task, shortcut, or service.
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable the obsolete entry.
- Open Task Scheduler from Start.
- Review Task Scheduler Library for tasks linked to removed NVIDIA software.
- Check the task’s Actions tab before disabling it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall the related obsolete program.
- Restart Windows.
Do not supply a DLL merely to silence an orphaned startup command. Removing the unused software or startup entry is the safer repair.
If the error remains, use the executable path shown in the dialog, Event Viewer, or application logs to locate the requester. A stale path, incompatible 32-bit and 64-bit module, or missing dependency may be responsible.
Prevention
- Install graphics drivers from NVIDIA’s official driver portal or a manufacturer-provided package.
- Use Custom (Advanced) and clean installation when replacing a damaged NVIDIA driver.
- Keep installers for legacy applications that are still required.
- Before deleting an old NVIDIA utility, check whether a startup entry or scheduled task depends on it.
- Keep Windows Security active and review quarantine decisions rather than restoring DLLs automatically.
- Do not treat every missing DLL as a reason to install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
- Keep a restore point before major driver or software changes.
FAQ
Is nvrshu.dll a Windows 11 file?
No authoritative evidence establishes it as part of current Windows 11 or Windows 10 installations. It is associated with a legacy NVIDIA display-driver package for Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Is nvrshu.dll a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No. The file is identified as an NVIDIA Hungarian-language resource library. Installing current Visual C++ redistributables or DirectX is not the primary repair.
Which NVIDIA driver contains nvrshu.dll?
The file is historically associated with NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver version 29.42. That does not prove every copy belongs to that exact version, and current NVIDIA packages may not contain the filename.
Should I download nvrshu.dll from a DLL website?
No. Unverified downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or come from an incompatible driver generation. Repair the requesting application or obtain the matching driver from NVIDIA instead.
Should I place it in System32?
No. Do not assume a system-wide location. A legacy application may require its own 32-bit copy, while a modern system may not need the file at all.
Will SFC restore nvrshu.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, and nvrshu.dll is a third-party NVIDIA file. Reinstall the NVIDIA driver or the application that originally supplied it.
Why does the error say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the DLL may be the wrong architecture, or the program may be searching the wrong directory. Identify the requesting executable and repair its complete installation rather than copying more DLLs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is the file malware?
The name corresponds to a legitimate historical NVIDIA resource DLL, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is genuine. Verify its source, path, digital signature where available, and connection to an official NVIDIA installation. If it came from an unknown download or location, do not restore it blindly.
