Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“The program can’t start because nvtoolsext64_1.dll is missing from your computer.” The nvtoolsext64_1.dll error usually means that an NVIDIA runtime file required by a game, CUDA application, developer tool, or 3D program is missing or incompatible.
Do not begin by downloading the DLL and copying it into System32. The correct repair depends on the program that requested it.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing Windows:
- One game or application fails: Repair or reinstall that program first. Its private copy of the DLL may need to remain beside the program executable.
- A CUDA, PyTorch, or machine-learning environment fails: Reinstall the CUDA Toolkit branch required by that environment, including its NVTX component.
- Several NVIDIA-dependent programs fail after a driver change: Check the NVIDIA display driver and remove damaged driver leftovers before reinstalling the correct driver.
- The error began after antivirus activity: Check Protection history and verify the quarantined file before restoring it.
- The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: A dependency of the DLL may be missing. Replacing the named file alone may not help.
- Windows itself has several unrelated errors: Run DISM and SFC. These repair protected Windows components, not normally third-party NVIDIA files.
- You do not know which program is responsible: Read the complete dialog and identify the executable or installation folder before repairing anything.
What nvtoolsext64_1.dll is
nvtoolsext64_1.dll is associated with NVIDIA Tools Extension, commonly called NVTX. NVTX is an API that applications use to annotate events, code ranges, and resources for NVIDIA profiling and performance analysis.
The filename also gives useful clues:
64indicates a 64-bit Windows DLL._1identifies the versioned NVTX naming scheme used by older Windows distributions..dllmeans it is a dynamic-link library loaded by another program.
This is not a normal Windows system DLL. It should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The file may come from the CUDA Toolkit, an older NVIDIA developer package, or an application that bundles its own copy.

The filename alone cannot identify the original owner. A commercial application, game, CUDA environment, and NVIDIA development tool can package different builds. Their file sizes, hashes, publishers, and compatibility are not universal.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error
This is the safest and most likely fix.
Identify the owner
- Read the entire error dialog.
- Note the program name and the action that triggered the error.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Target. The executable path often reveals the installation folder.
- Open that folder and check whether the program normally stores its DLLs beside the executable.
- Search the program’s installation directory for
nvtoolsext64_1.dll. - Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history in case the file was quarantined.
If only one game or application fails, repair that program rather than installing a global NVIDIA package. A game launcher may have a Verify, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity command. Use it before uninstalling.
Use Windows repair controls
For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair does not work, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
For a classic desktop program:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or a similarly named option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the original vendor installer or game launcher. Do not preserve a manually downloaded replacement DLL.
A successful repair means the program starts normally and the same error does not return. If the program now reports an entry-point error, the installed DLL is probably from the wrong NVTX or CUDA generation. Reinstall the owning application again rather than mixing DLL versions.

Fix 2: Restore the matching CUDA and NVTX components
CUDA users should not assume that the newest CUDA release will work with an older application. CUDA-dependent software can require a particular branch or runtime layout.
This applies especially to:
- PyTorch or other machine-learning environments
- CUDA development projects
- NVIDIA profiling tools
- Scientific and engineering software
- Older applications that use an NVIDIA developer package
Check the application’s documentation or environment requirements for its expected CUDA branch. Then download that matching release from NVIDIA’s official CUDA download page or CUDA Toolkit Archive. Select the Windows installer and include the NVTX or related development component when the installer offers component choices.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected program from its normal shortcut or launcher.
- Check whether the error has disappeared.
- If the application still fails, confirm that it is using the CUDA installation you repaired rather than a separate virtual environment or bundled runtime.
Do not copy a DLL from one CUDA directory into another application. A file that loads successfully in one program may be the wrong ABI or version for another.
The NVIDIA display driver and CUDA Toolkit are separate products. Reinstalling the graphics driver alone may not restore a missing CUDA or NVTX runtime. Conversely, installing the full CUDA Toolkit is unnecessary when only a game’s private installation is damaged.
Fix 3: Verify or reinstall the game or application’s private files
Some applications redistribute NVTX files in their own folders. In that case, Windows may be searching beside the executable rather than in a global NVIDIA directory.
Use the launcher’s repair process:
- Open the game or application launcher.
- Open its library or installed-program list.
- Select the affected title.
- Open Manage, Properties, or Settings.
- Choose Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent command.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
If verification reports damaged or missing files, allow it to replace them. If it reports no problem but the DLL error remains, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official source.

Do not add the file to every game folder. That can hide the actual installation problem and make future updates harder to diagnose.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can quarantine a legitimate file, but restoring a file solely because an application requests it is unsafe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected program or
nvtoolsext64_1.dll. - Confirm the original file path.
- Check that the path belongs to the legitimate application or NVIDIA installation.
- Verify the file’s digital signature if available.
- Restore it only when its source and identity are clear.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward if necessary.
Do not disable antivirus protection to install an unknown DLL. If the file was recovered from a backup or another machine, compare its hash with a trusted copy supplied by the application vendor. File size and filename alone are not sufficient verification.
If the quarantine event points to an unexpected temporary folder, user profile folder, or unknown executable, scan the system and reinstall the affected program from a trusted source instead of restoring the file.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Because this file is NVIDIA-associated, a damaged driver package can be relevant, particularly when several NVIDIA-dependent programs fail after a driver update. It is not, however, proof that the display driver owns the missing DLL.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver status.

For a clean reinstall:
- Download the correct driver for the exact NVIDIA graphics model and Windows version from NVIDIA’s official support page.
- Close graphics applications.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Custom installation when offered.
- Select Perform a clean installation if available.
- Install the required display components.
- Restart Windows.
If only one application fails, reinstalling the display driver may not change anything. Return to Fix 1 or Fix 2 and repair the application or matching CUDA package.
Manually identifying old driver packages and matching every device version can be tedious, especially on machines with several hardware components. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what needs attention, while driver installation and repair require the full version. Reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.

Fix 6: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when the DLL error appears alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, crashes, or damaged system files. These commands will not normally recreate a third-party NVIDIA DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without finding a problem, continue repairing the owning application rather than repeating them.
Manually interpreting DISM and SFC results can involve repeated scans without clearly showing which application caused the failure. Outbyte PC Repair can identify issues during its free scan, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the specific program that owns this NVIDIA runtime.

nvtoolsext64_1.dll is a 64-bit file. A 32-bit application cannot be repaired safely by placing this file beside its executable. It needs the correct 32-bit dependency where the application expects it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To check an application’s architecture:
- Start the program if possible.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows build provides it.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The error “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that nvtoolsext64_1.dll exists but one of its dependencies is absent. In that situation, replacing the named DLL does not solve the dependency chain. Repair the application first, then use an appropriate dependency-analysis tool as an advanced diagnostic.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file. NVTX is a runtime/API library, not a documented COM or ActiveX server. Registration normally fails because the DLL does not expose the registration entry point that regsvr32 expects.

Windows Features: what not to change
There is no general Windows Feature that installs nvtoolsext64_1.dll. Do not enable random legacy components in Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off as a substitute for repairing the application.
Windows Features may be relevant only when the error is actually caused by a separate framework requirement identified by the application vendor. They do not provide a universal NVTX repair.

If the error still returns
If reinstalling the owning program does not help:
- Record the complete error text.
- Record the failing executable path.
- Check whether the DLL exists beside that executable or in a CUDA/NVIDIA directory.
- Review antivirus quarantine and detection history.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check for a second installation of the same program or CUDA branch.
- Inspect the application’s loader path and missing dependencies.
- Scan for malware if the file or executable was altered.
- Check disk health if files repeatedly disappear or become corrupted.
- Use System Restore only if the failure clearly followed a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists.
The correct endpoint is a verified copy supplied by the owning application or its official vendor. Avoid global DLL replacement, random version mixing, and copying files into Windows system folders.
