Why each Connections group fits
Yellow: Beer brands
The four phrases are names of beer brands. Color and arrangement provide extra nudges: MOON is blue, STRIPE is red, and EQUIS appears twice to suggest “dos,” Spanish for two. MILLER and LIFE are arranged to point toward HIGH LIFE.
Green: Rock bands
These tiles resolve into GREEN DAY, PINK FLOYD, THREE DOORS DOWN, and U2. DAY is green and FLOYD is pink; DOORS appears three times in a vertical stack, while the letter U appears twice.
Blue: Movies
The group contains BACK TO THE FUTURE, BLUE VELVET, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, and TOP GUN. VELVET is blue, BACK TO THE FUTURE is written backward, and the placement of THE above SINGIN’ and RAIN below it puts “in” between the two words. GUN sits at the top to cue TOP GUN.

Purple: U.S. city nicknames
BIG APPLE refers to New York City, BIG EASY to New Orleans, MILE HIGH CITY to Denver, and SECOND CITY to Chicago. APPLE and EASY are enlarged to suggest “big”; the other two phrases are familiar city nicknames.

This puzzle is not just a test of recognizing phrases. Several tiles use their appearance as part of the clue: color identifies words in BLUE MOON, RED STRIPE, GREEN DAY, PINK FLOYD, and BLUE VELVET; repeated words or letters indicate a count; and reversal, size, and position point toward movie titles and city nicknames. Reading both the words and how they are displayed is the key to the board’s less obvious connections.
