Why this board can mislead you
Several words initially appear to belong together because they suggest intensity or scale. NOVA, SUPER and HYPER can pull you toward a false theme before the PBS connection becomes clear. ANGERS and NICE also look like ordinary English words until you consider French geography; CHAMPAGNE and REUNION then complete that group.
Rank #2
Those are solving traps, not evidence of an official difficulty statistic. TechRadar described this puzzle as “Moderate” and reported a perfect score in its own write-up, which reflects that article’s experience rather than a published population-wide solve rate.
How the Connections format works
The New York Times describes Connections as a word game in which you find themes linking words. You receive 16 words and must separate them into four groups of four. The categories are color-coded by intended difficulty: Yellow is easiest, followed by Green, Blue and Purple. Because words can support more than one apparent relationship, the game uses overlapping possibilities to create misdirection; each puzzle nevertheless has one intended solution.
