Blue: ONES WEARING ROBES
- BOXER
- JUDGE
- MONK
- WIZARD
This is the puzzle’s broad, image-based connection. A boxer may wear a boxing robe, a judge wears judicial robes, a monk wears religious robes, and a wizard is conventionally portrayed in a robe. They do not share a profession or fictional setting; the common link is the clothing associated with each one.
Purple: ___ UP
- BATTER
- BOTTOMS
- CHIN
- LAWYER
Each word forms a familiar expression when followed by up:
- Batter up — a baseball call inviting the batter to take their turn.
- Bottoms up — a toast or instruction associated with finishing a drink.
- Chin up — an expression of encouragement.
- Lawyer up — to obtain legal representation, especially before dealing with a legal matter.
The purple group is likely to be the toughest because the four words are connected by phrase mechanics rather than by a concrete subject or object.
Why this grid was tricky
Several words invite plausible but incorrect groupings. LAB is short and highly flexible, so it can look like part of an animal or breed-related set before the academic-course category becomes apparent. PIT can suggest animals, sports, or a theater, but here it simply belongs with other excavated spaces.

- MADE FOR YOUNG LEARNERS: Specially designed for kids and early writers
- BETTER WRITING CONTROL: Barrel design helps guide small hands as skills develop
- LESS BROKEN LEAD: Thick 1.3mm lead resists breakage
- COMFORTABLE GRIP AND STABILITY: Triangle barrel shape encourages proper finger placement
- COMES IN A PACK: Includes 5 triangle pencils for kids in fun barrel colors, 1 lead refill set, and 2 erasers
BOTTOMS may tempt you toward clothing, particularly “bell bottoms.” That association is real, but it does not explain the other words in the grid. The intended match is bottoms up, alongside batter up, chin up, and lawyer up.
The robe category is deliberately loose. If you were looking for four people from the same field, BOXER, JUDGE, MONK, and WIZARD would not seem to belong together. Once the other three categories are removed, however, their shared visual association becomes clear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the Connections groups work
Connections presents 16 words that must be divided into four groups of four. You can make up to four mistakes. The colored categories traditionally range from yellow, generally the easiest, to purple, generally the most difficult. Those colors indicate intended difficulty, not a required solving order: a solver may find the purple group first or struggle with the yellow group.
For a grid like #591, a useful approach is to test whether a suspected connection accounts for exactly four words and leaves the remaining words with stronger, cleaner relationships. If a word fits several possible categories, treat it as a likely red herring until the surrounding three words confirm the intended group.
