How Connections works

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on shared themes. The New York Times Help Center describes it as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.” Categories are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple, with yellow presented as easiest and purple as trickiest. The challenge is that words may seem to fit more than one theme; the Times says its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.

Playing the daily puzzle or finding the archive

The Times says Connections is free to play without registration on its listed platforms: the Games app, NYTimes.com Connections, NYTimes.com/The Athletic, and the News app. Daily puzzles release at midnight in the player’s timezone, so the date associated with a puzzle can vary by location.

The official archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, but archive access is limited to All Access and Games subscribers. Playing archived puzzles affects some game statistics, but not current or maximum streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed.
