Answers for Monday, September 29, 2025

Spoilers below: Parade’s guide lists these four categories and word groups for puzzle #841; Herzindagi reports the same answers.

  • Kinds of underwear: BOXER, BRIEF, HIPSTER, THONG
  • Play a joke on: FOOL, PRANK, PUNK, TRICK
  • Parts of a toilet tank: CHAIN, FLAPPER, FLOAT, HANDLE
  • First words in ’70s rock song titles: BABA, BOHEMIAN, HOTEL, STAIRWAY

Why the groups fit

Underwear and practical jokes

BOXER, BRIEF, HIPSTER and THONG are underwear types. FOOL, PRANK, PUNK and TRICK all fit the idea of playing a joke on someone. PUNK may first suggest a music genre, but in this group it is a verb meaning to fool or prank someone.

Toilet-tank parts

CHAIN, FLAPPER, FLOAT and HANDLE identify components or controls inside a toilet tank. CHAIN and FLOAT can look like possible music references at first, but they belong together as fixture parts.

Opening words of ’70s rock titles

BABA begins “Baba O’Riley,” BOHEMIAN begins “Bohemian Rhapsody,” HOTEL begins “Hotel California,” and STAIRWAY begins “Stairway to Heaven.” Each is the first word in a well-known rock song title from the 1970s.
