Spoiler warning: The complete solution to NYT Connections puzzle #848 appears below. This was the Monday, October 6, 2025 grid—not a current-day puzzle.

NYT Connections #848 answer key

The sixteen words divide into these four groups:

Category Words
Parts of a record-player setup AMP, PREAMP, SPEAKER, TURNTABLE
Kinds of coats CAMEL, DUFFLE, PEA, TRENCH
Things that come on spools FILM, TAPE, THREAD, WIRE
Starting with homophones of greetings HAIKU, HAYSTACK, HELONIUM, YEOMAN

How each group works

Parts of a record-player setup

AMP, PREAMP, SPEAKER and TURNTABLE are components associated with playing vinyl records. A preamp boosts and prepares the signal, the amplifier drives the speakers, and the turntable reads the record.

Kinds of coats

CAMEL, DUFFLE, PEA and TRENCH each complete a familiar coat term: camel coat, duffle coat, pea coat and trench coat. The names refer to distinct styles or materials, not one shared garment feature.

Things that come on spools

FILM, TAPE, THREAD and WIRE can all be wound and supplied on spools. Film and recording tape are rolled media; thread and wire are continuous materials stored the same way.

Starting with homophones of greetings

The purple group uses a greeting-like sound at the beginning of each word:

  • HAIKU starts with “hi.”
  • HAYSTACK starts with “hey.”
  • HELONIUM starts with “hello.” Helonium is another name for helium hydride.
  • YEOMAN starts with “yo.”

The needle-and-thread red herring

THREAD can suggest a record-player needle because a needle or stylus is fine and pointed, but that association is a distraction. THREAD belongs with FILM, TAPE and WIRE in the spool category. It is not an additional connection or a fifth group.

Hints for the four categories

If you wanted progressive clues before seeing the answers, the groups could be approached this way:

  1. Record-player group: Required for vinyl playback.
  2. Coat group: Types of winter or outdoor garment.
  3. Spool group: Materials or media you can wind up.
  4. Purple group: The first sound resembles a greeting.
