Spoiler warning: NYT Connections game #874, published Saturday, November 1, 2025, groups its 16 tiles into legal actions, shades of black, second members of famous real-life duos, and rodents who lead cartoon duos. If you want to solve it yourself, start with the graduated hints below and stop before the answer table.
How to approach Connections #874
Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to make four groups of four. The categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is the most accessible, followed by green, blue and purple. You can make up to four incorrect guesses, so test a group only when all four words fit the same idea.
Graduated hints for November 1
Yellow hint
Think of legal steps you can take to initiate or escalate a case.
Green hint
These words can describe the darkest color or a deep, rich black.
#1 Best Overall
Blue hint
Each answer is the second-named member of a famous human or real-life double act.

Connections #874 answers
| Color | Category | Tiles | What they reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Take to court | CHARGE, FILE, INDICT, SUE | Actions used to bring or advance a legal case. |
| Green | Black | INKY, JET, PITCH, RAVEN | Words associated with an especially dark black. |
| Blue | Second in a famous real-life duo | CHER, CLYDE, HARDY, TELLER | Sonny and Cher; Bonnie and Clyde; Laurel and Hardy; Penn and Teller. |
| Purple | First rodent in a cartoon duo | CHIP, ITCHY, PINKY, ROCKY | Chip ’n’ Dale; Itchy & Scratchy; Pinky and the Brain; Rocky and Bullwinkle. |
Why the puzzle is tricky
The two duo categories overlap at first
Several tiles look like names rather than ordinary vocabulary. The blue group requires the second name in a well-known human duo, while purple requires the first name of a cartoon rodent pair. Keeping that ordering distinction in mind separates CHER, CLYDE, HARDY and TELLER from CHIP, ITCHY, PINKY and ROCKY.
Pac-Man is a tempting distraction
INKY, PINKY and CLYDE can suggest the Pac-Man ghosts, but that association does not produce a valid group of four. CLYDE belongs with the real-life duo names, while INKY belongs with the black-color terms and PINKY belongs with the cartoon rodents.
RAVEN can pull you toward a proper-name reading
RAVEN may initially look like another character or performer name. In this grid it describes a very dark black, alongside INKY, JET and PITCH.
Quick Recap
Best Value
A spoiler-free solving route
- Look for the straightforward verbs. CHARGE, FILE, INDICT and SUE all describe legal action, making the yellow group a strong first solve.
- Check color vocabulary. INKY, JET, PITCH and RAVEN all modify or evoke an intensely dark black.
- Separate the duo names by position. CHER, CLYDE, HARDY and TELLER are the second names in famous human pairings.
- Use the remaining four tiles for purple. CHIP, ITCHY, PINKY and ROCKY are the first-named rodents in animated pairs.
