Blue: Poe story titles after “The”

CASK, FALL, MASQUE, PIT. They complete the titles The Cask of Amontillado, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Pit and the Pendulum.

Purple: An organ plus a letter

COLONY is COLON + Y; HEARTH is HEART + H; LUNGE is LUNG + E; and SKINK is SKIN + K.

Why the grid can mislead

SQUAT and LUNGE both look like exercise words, but they belong to separate groups: SQUAT is in STOCKY, while LUNGE is formed from LUNG plus E. HEARTH may also look like an ordinary standalone word until you spot HEART with an added H.
