NYT Connections answers for July 8, 2025
The four categories were LIAISON, SEEN IN A LOCKER ROOM, SOMETHING ENTERED FOR ACCESS and JOHNS. The complete groupings are:
| Color | Category | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | LIAISON | AFFAIR, FLING, RELATIONS, THING |
| Green | SEEN IN A LOCKER ROOM | BENCH, LOCKER, MIRROR, SCALE |
| Blue | SOMETHING ENTERED FOR ACCESS | CODE, KEY, PASSWORD, PIN |
| Purple | JOHNS | CANDY, CARPENTER, LEGEND, MAJOR |
Yellow: LIAISON
AFFAIR, FLING, RELATIONS, THING
Each word can describe a romantic involvement or relationship. “Thing” is the least direct entry, but someone can say they “have a thing” for another person. “Liaison” is the category’s more formal term for a relationship or affair.

Green: SEEN IN A LOCKER ROOM
BENCH, LOCKER, MIRROR, SCALE
These are objects or fixtures a person might commonly find in a gym locker room. This is deliberately a broad setting-based category rather than a group of strictly defined pieces of gym equipment.
Blue: SOMETHING ENTERED FOR ACCESS
CODE, KEY, PASSWORD, PIN
A code, password or PIN can be entered to authenticate or unlock access. A key can also be supplied electronically or physically to gain access, making it a particularly effective red herring: it may first suggest a map, musical key or ordinary door lock instead.
Rank #3
Purple: JOHNS
CANDY, CARPENTER, LEGEND, MAJOR
Each surname forms the name of a notable person when paired with John:
- John Candy, the Canadian actor and comedian
- John Carpenter, the filmmaker and composer
- John Legend, the singer and songwriter
- John Major, the former British prime minister
This is the puzzle’s most knowledge-dependent group. CARPENTER and LEGEND can initially look like entertainment-related words, while MAJOR may invite unrelated connections. The shared link is the first name John.

What made this Connections grid tricky?
The main trap is KEY. It can refer to several things, but here it belongs with CODE, PASSWORD and PIN as something used to gain access. Once that group is removed, the locker-room set becomes easier to spot.
Rank #4
The purple group requires recognizing four different people named John rather than finding a meaning shared by the words themselves. The remaining semantic group then falls into place: AFFAIR, FLING, RELATIONS and THING can all describe romantic involvement.
A practical solving route is to identify the access words first, followed by the locker-room objects. That leaves the romantic synonyms and the proper-name references with fewer possible overlaps.
