Spoilers: These are the answers to NYT Connections puzzle #306, dated Friday, April 12, 2024. The independent Connections Answers archive credits the puzzle to Wyna Liu.

Connections #306 answers for April 12, 2024

The independent Connections Answers archive lists these four groups and their words:

  • ORDERLY: CLEAN, NEAT, TIDY, TRIM
  • AUGMENTATIVE PREFIXES: HYPER, SUPER, UBER, ULTRA
  • BECOME LARGER: BALLOON, MUSHROOM, SNOWBALL, SWELL
  • ITEMS IN CLASSIC KIDS’ GAMES: DOMINO, JACK, MARBLE, STICK

Why the words fit together

ORDERLY

CLEAN, NEAT, TIDY, and TRIM can all describe something orderly or neat.

AUGMENTATIVE PREFIXES

HYPER, SUPER, UBER, and ULTRA are prefixes that intensify or enlarge the meaning of the word they modify. This is a word-pattern category, not simply a set of synonyms.

BECOME LARGER

BALLOON, MUSHROOM, SNOWBALL, and SWELL can each mean to grow or become larger.

ITEMS IN CLASSIC KIDS’ GAMES

DOMINO, JACK, MARBLE, and STICK are game pieces or objects associated with classic children’s games. This label and grouping are reported by the independent answer archive rather than a primary NYT answer page.

How Connections works

The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as a puzzle where players sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded by difficulty, from yellow as the easiest to purple as the trickiest. As the Help Center puts it, “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.” See the official Connections help page for the rules and play options.
