Need help with the New York Times Connections puzzle for Wednesday, April 30, 2025? Game #689 is built around footwear, accommodating people, reputation and a word-ending wordplay trick. Start with the graduated hints below; the complete groupings appear after the spoiler warning.
How to approach Connections #689
Connections presents 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. Each group has a shared relationship, and the color system reflects difficulty: yellow is usually the most direct, followed by green, blue and purple. You can make up to four mistakes, so test a suspected category against all four words before submitting it.
Use the obvious pairs, but wait for four
Scan the entire grid first. HEEL and SOLE strongly suggest footwear, while ROOM, CAPACITY and SEATING point toward making space for people. Do not lock in a category until you can identify all four members; Connections often includes words that appear to fit more than one idea.
Save the unusual relationship for last
If three categories become clear, the remaining four words may solve by elimination. In this grid, the hardest group is not a normal semantic category: its members end in short expressions associated with disgust.

The full solution to the Wednesday, April 30, 2025 puzzle is below.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Parts of a shoe | HEEL, SOLE, TONGUE, UPPER |
| Green | Accommodation | CAPACITY, CHAIRS, ROOM, SEATING |
| Blue | Reputation | FACE, IMAGE, REGARD, STANDING |
| Purple | Ending with synonyms for “yuck” | DYNASTY, ENGROSS, GIMMICK, MILDEW |
Why the purple group works
The purple category depends on the final letters rather than the words’ overall meanings:
- DYNASTY ends in “asty,” suggesting “tasty” with the initial sound removed and used here as an unpleasant-food expression.
- ENGROSS ends in “gross,” a direct synonym for disgusting.
- GIMMICK ends in “ick,” an expression of disgust.
- MILDEW ends in “ew,” another reaction to something unpleasant.
That construction is why these four words look unrelated until you inspect their endings.
Step-by-step solving path
- Circle the footwear terms: HEEL, SOLE, TONGUE and UPPER are all parts of a shoe.
- Separate the accommodation terms: CAPACITY, CHAIRS, ROOM and SEATING describe available space or arrangements for people.
- Group the reputation words: FACE, IMAGE, REGARD and STANDING can all describe how someone is regarded.
- Inspect what remains: DYNASTY, ENGROSS, GIMMICK and MILDEW share the disgust-related endings that form the purple group.
