The board’s sixteen words are divided into four groups of four:
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Pieces of furniture | BED, CHAIR, COUCH, TABLE |
| Green | Carry, as a feeling | BEAR, HARBOR, HOLD, MAINTAIN |
| Blue | Wine-tasting descriptors | BALANCED, DRY, FULL, SWEET |
| Purple | Starting with metals | GOLDILOCKS, IRONIC, LEADERSHIP, TINDER |
Why the purple group fits
The connection is at the start of each word: GOLD begins GOLDILOCKS, IRON begins IRONIC, LEAD begins LEADERSHIP, and TIN begins TINDER. The green group also relies on a shared meaning: bear, harbor, hold, and maintain can each describe carrying or keeping a feeling.

Connections asks players to sort sixteen terms into four groups of four. Categories can use wordplay as well as direct meanings, and words that appear to fit more than one group can act as red herrings. Yellow is commonly treated as the most straightforward category, with purple the most difficult. Wikipedia’s overview of the game provides general gameplay context.
