These progressive hints and answers are for NYT Connections puzzle #244, from Saturday, February 10, 2024. Start with the gentle clues and stop before the spoiler warning if you want to solve the board yourself.
How Connections works
The New York Times’ Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The groups are color-coded: yellow is described as easiest and purple as trickiest. The NYT also notes that words can seem to fit more than one category, so check that all four words belong together before submitting a group. NYT Help Center: Connections
Gentle hints for puzzle #244
Try these in order, stopping as soon as you have enough to continue:
- One group is made up of words for an informer—someone who tells on another person.
- Another group shares verbs for forcing things into a tight space.
- One category is a set of yoga poses.
- The final group makes familiar compounds when you add the same word after each item.
Stronger clues by color
- Yellow: Think of a stool pigeon.
- Green: These actions cram something into a tight space.
- Blue: These are yoga poses.
- Purple: Add “fly” after each word.

| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | STOOL PIGEON | CANARY, FINK, RAT, SNITCH |
| Green | CRAM INTO A TIGHT SPACE | JAM, PACK, SQUEEZE, STUFF |
| Blue | YOGA POSES | CAT, COW, MOUNTAIN, TRIANGLE |
| Purple | ___FLY | BUTTER, DRAGON, FIRE, HORSE |
Why the purple group works
Each purple answer forms a familiar compound with “fly”: butterfly, dragonfly, firefly, and horsefly. The connection is word completion rather than a shared literal subject, which makes it easier to overlook while scanning the board.
