Hints for Connections #627
The New York Times gives players 16 words and asks them to find four groups of four. Because words can appear to fit more than one category, wait until all four entries clearly match before submitting.
Yellow-group hint
Think of actions used to reach someone by telephone.
Green-group hint
Look for familiar parts or fittings found in a car.

Blue-group hint
Consider levels associated with living organization.
Purple-group hint

Spoilers: the Connections #627 answers
The complete grid was CALL, DIAL, PHONE, RING, BELT, HORN, MIRROR, WHEEL, ATOM, CELL, ORGAN, TISSUE, BIGFOOT, COMPOUND, INSTAGRAM and THERMOMETER.
| Group | Words | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|
| Contact via telephone | CALL, DIAL, PHONE, RING | Each word can describe an action used to contact someone by telephone. |
| Parts of a car | BELT, HORN, MIRROR, WHEEL | Each names a car component or fitting. |
| Levels of biological organization | ATOM, CELL, ORGAN, TISSUE | This is the published category label. Cell, tissue and organ are biological levels; atom makes the grouping scientifically loose rather than a strict hierarchy. |
| Ending with units of measure | BIGFOOT, COMPOUND, INSTAGRAM, THERMOMETER | They end in FOOT, POUND, GRAM and METER, respectively. |
Why the overlaps are tricky
PHONE, DIAL, CALL and RING are intended as telephone-contact verbs. DIAL can also be a control, and RING can be an object, so those alternate meanings can pull them toward another group. The car answers are literal components, which helps separate them once all four are considered together.

The purple set is a word-ending puzzle rather than a category based on the whole word: BIGFOOT contains FOOT, COMPOUND ends in POUND, INSTAGRAM ends in GRAM, and THERMOMETER ends in METER.
A practical solving order
- Mark the obvious telephone verbs: CALL, DIAL, PHONE and RING.
- Check the remaining entries for physical car parts: BELT, HORN, MIRROR and WHEEL.
- Group ATOM, CELL, ORGAN and TISSUE, while remembering that the official label is broader than a rigorous biological sequence.
- Read the final four words by their endings to uncover FOOT, POUND, GRAM and METER.
