Need a hint for the Friday, July 12, 2024 NYT Connections puzzle? This is game #397. Start with the spoiler-light clues below, then reveal the category names or full answer groups only when you’re ready.

How Connections works

Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four that share something in common. Yellow is the easiest category and purple the trickiest. The challenge is that a word may seem to fit more than one theme; the New York Times says its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.

Hints for the July 12 puzzle

Try these in order, stopping as soon as you have enough to solve the board:

  1. Think of places or facilities you might find at a school.
  2. One category is made up of roulette wagers.
  3. Consider different things associated with the word “Dove.”
  4. Four words can each go before “Goose.”
