Green — CONCEALING COVER

BLANKET, CLOAK, CURTAIN, LAYER can each cover or hide something.

Blue — WAYS ONE MIGHT REFER TO #

HASH, NUMBER, POUND, SHARP are names or uses for the same symbol: the hash or number sign, the pound key, and the sharp sign in music notation. POUND is the best-supported tile for this group; TechRadar, Parade, and Forbes list it, while GameDaily lists POINT instead. TechRadar, Parade, Forbes, GameDaily.

Purple — WORDS FOR LUCIDITY, IN THE SINGULAR

FACULTY, MARBLE, SENSE, WIT can refer to clear or sound thinking, as in “mental faculty,” “good sense,” and “wit,” or the idiom “lose one’s marbles.”

The tempting cake connection

SPONGE, MARBLE, POUND, and LAYER can all suggest types of cake. That is a plausible red herring, but those four words belong to different Connections groups in this puzzle.
