Spoilers: the complete answers for #894

Stop here if you want to solve the grid before seeing the groups.

  • Yellow — Things worn on lapels: AWARENESS RIBBON, BOUTONNIÈRE, LAPEL PIN, LAVALIER.
  • Green — Cocktails: COSMOPOLITAN, GREYHOUND, SCREWDRIVER, SEA BREEZE.
  • Blue — Pixar protagonists: CLOWNFISH, GRUMPY OLD MAN, RACECAR, TALKING DOLL.
  • Purple — Starting with synonyms for “eat”: BOLT CUTTER, CHOW MEIN, SCARF RING, WOLF EEL.

Why the trickier groups fit

The Pixar clues describe characters

CLOWNFISH points to the central characters in Finding Nemo; GRUMPY OLD MAN describes Carl from Up; RACECAR points to Cars; and TALKING DOLL points to Woody from Toy Story.

The purple connection is in the first word

BOLT, CHOW, SCARF, and WOLF can each be used as a verb meaning to eat quickly. The connection applies to the opening word of each tile, not the full phrase. The tile is SCARF RING, not “SCAR RING.”

Watch for tempting overlaps

GREYHOUND may look like an animal clue, but it belongs with the cocktails. WOLF EEL is in the wordplay group, while CHOW MEIN is not part of the food category. SEA BREEZE is a cocktail, despite sounding like a weather phrase.
