Answers for January 18, 2025
Spoiler warning: the complete solution is below.
| Color | Group | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | DESIRE | DRIVE, IMPULSE, ITCH, URGE |
| Green | BARB | SPINE, SPUR, STICKER, THORN |
| Blue | INFO ON A RECORD | ALBUM, ARTIST, LABEL, TRACK |
| Purple | TURN THE ___ | CORNER, PAGE, TABLES, TIDE |
How each group works
Yellow: DESIRE
DRIVE, IMPULSE, ITCH and URGE can each describe a strong desire or compelling want. “An itch” is figurative here, as in an itch that must be scratched.
Green: BARB
SPINE, SPUR, STICKER and THORN are sharp projections or pointed objects. “Sticker” is the less obvious entry: a sticker can be a sharp-pointed spine on a plant or animal, depending on usage.

Blue: INFO ON A RECORD
ALBUM, ARTIST, LABEL and TRACK are all information associated with a music record. An album identifies the release, an artist identifies its performer, a label identifies the publisher, and a track identifies an individual song.
Purple: TURN THE ___
CORNER, PAGE, TABLES and TIDE complete familiar phrases: turn the corner, turn the page, turn the tables and turn the tide.
Why this board is easy to misread
SPINE can look like a book clue
SPINE naturally suggests books, especially alongside PAGE. In this puzzle, however, SPINE belongs with the pointed objects in BARB, while PAGE is reserved for the phrase “turn the page.”
SPUR can look like desire
To spur someone can mean to motivate or drive them, making SPUR tempting for DESIRE. The intended group uses the noun sense of a sharp projection, placing it with SPINE, STICKER and THORN.

Several words are deliberately broad
DRIVE, PAGE, SPUR and SPINE each support plausible alternatives. Test a suspected category against all four words before submitting; a connection that explains only three is usually a trap.
A practical way to solve Connections
- Scan for fixed phrases. Try placing a word after or before a common expression. On this board, CORNER, PAGE, TABLES and TIDE reveal the purple set.
- Look for a concrete shared meaning. Once phrase candidates are removed, the sharp-object meanings point to BARB.
- Check a domain cluster. ALBUM, ARTIST, LABEL and TRACK all belong to record information.
- Use the remainder carefully. The four leftover words—DRIVE, IMPULSE, ITCH and URGE—form DESIRE.
- Challenge every group. The game permits up to four mistakes, so reserve submissions for sets that have four precise matches rather than three loose associations.
How Connections scoring and colors work
NYT Connections asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four. The color indicates relative difficulty: yellow is generally easiest, green follows, blue is tougher, and purple is usually the most difficult. You can play for free through the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile, with up to four incorrect guesses allowed.
A guide covering this puzzle described the solve as hard and reported making two mistakes; that is the guide author’s experience, not a published population statistic.
