How the puzzle’s wordplay works
Meaning-based groups
OUTDO collects verbs that describe beating or exceeding a rival, while PICNIC ACCESSORIES groups familiar things used for an outdoor meal. Some words can seem to fit more than one possible theme, so look for a complete set of four that shares one precise connection.

The Indiana Jones costume group
BOMBER, FEDORA, SATCHEL, and WHIP point to Indiana Jones’s signature clothing and gear. The category is about recognizable costume elements, not a general collection of archaeological tools.

The sound-alike group
The purple connection depends on pronunciation rather than definitions: PAGAN, SMARTER, VIXEN, and WIDEN rhyme with U.S. presidential surnames. Reading candidates aloud can reveal a connection that is difficult to see on the board.
How Connections works
The New York Times Help Center explains: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” Each group has a color, with yellow the easiest and purple the trickiest under the game’s color convention. The Help Center also notes that words can appear to fit more than one category, even though each puzzle has one solution.

Playing the daily puzzle and archive
The New York Times Help Center says the daily Connections puzzle is free to play, requires no sign-in, and releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. It lists the Games app, nytimes.com/games/connections, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app as places to play.
Archive access is separate from daily play: the Help Center says the Connections archive is available to All Access and Games subscribers and goes back to June 12, 2023. Archive progress and history require a NYT account; archive puzzles affect some statistics but not streaks, and a completed archive puzzle cannot be replayed.
