How to approach the overlapping words
Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four sharing a common link. The New York Times Help Center says each puzzle has one intended solution, with categories color-coded from yellow, the easiest, through purple, the trickiest. The game’s editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. NYT Help Center: Connections

Some words can plausibly fit more than one idea, so test a group of four against a precise relationship before submitting it. For this board, the first three categories rely on direct meanings or common uses; the purple set depends on recognizing compound phrases ending in “nut.” Forbes’ contemporary guide notes that an almost-correct guess can trigger a one-word-away message, which can help identify a likely overlap without confirming the full group.
