This is the Thursday, July 24, 2025 edition of NYT Connections, puzzle #774. Start with the spoiler-safe hints below; the category names and full groups follow afterward.

Spoiler-safe hints for Connections #774

Read these from least to most revealing. Stop before the next section if you want to solve the board yourself.

  1. Yellow: Think very large.
  2. Green: Informal ways to leave quickly.
  3. Blue: Components of a basketball hoop.
  4. Purple: Words that sound like synonyms for “nab.”

Answers for July 24

The board’s sixteen words were STEEL, POLE, GIANT, SPLIT, JET, LUTE, RIM, KNICK, NET, TITANIC, GREAT, BOUNCE, DIP, BACKBOARD, RABE, and MAMMOTH.

Color Category Words
Yellow COLOSSAL GIANT, GREAT, MAMMOTH, TITANIC
Green LEAVE QUICKLY BOUNCE, DIP, JET, SPLIT
Blue PARTS OF A BASKETBALL HOOP BACKBOARD, NET, POLE, RIM
Purple HOMOPHONES OF SYNONYMS FOR “NAB” KNICK, LUTE, RABE, STEEL

Why the tricky groups work

The New York teams are a decoy

NET, JET, GIANT, and KNICK can suggest New York sports teams, but that is not a complete intended group. The actual sports-related set is the basketball-hoop components: BACKBOARD, NET, POLE, and RIM.

Purple depends on sound, not spelling

Each purple answer sounds like a word meaning “nab”: KNICK sounds like nick, LUTE like loot, RABE like rob, and STEEL like steal. Keep the puzzle’s spelling RABE; it is the sound-alike form used on the board.
