Connections #379 answers for June 24
Spoiler warning: The complete categories and word groups are below.
Yellow: SORE TO THE TOUCH
- DELICATE
- RAW
- SENSITIVE
- TENDER
These words can describe skin or another part of the body that hurts, is irritated, exposed, or unusually responsive to touch. RAW, SENSITIVE, and TENDER are the most direct matches. DELICATE is the less obvious inclusion because it can describe something easily irritated or injured rather than explicitly painful.
Green: RESTAURANT COURSES
- DESSERT
- MAIN
- SIDE
- STARTER
Each word can describe part of a restaurant meal. A starter begins the meal, a main is the principal course, a side accompanies it, and dessert usually comes last. MAIN and SIDE are useful pieces of misdirection because they also appear in many unrelated phrases.
Blue: ANIMAL HOMOPHONES
- BARE → bear
- DEAR → deer
- MOUSSE → moose
- NEW → gnu
This group works by sound, not meaning. BARE sounds like bear, DEAR sounds like deer, and MOUSSE sounds like moose. The trickiest pairing is NEW and gnu: a gnu—also called a wildebeest—is pronounced like “new.”

Purple: RED ___
- CARPET → red carpet
- DELICIOUS → Red Delicious
- MEAT → red meat
- TAPE → red tape
All four words can follow RED. Red carpet, red meat, and red tape are familiar phrases. Red Delicious is the outlier: it is the name of an apple variety, which explains why DELICIOUS may initially look as if it belongs with the restaurant words.
How to solve Connections #379
A practical route is to start with the restaurant category. DESSERT, MAIN, SIDE, and STARTER form a clean set, even though MAIN and SIDE can suggest other meanings.
Next, look for words describing physical soreness: DELICATE, RAW, SENSITIVE, and TENDER. Removing those eight words leaves a much more distinctive set of wordplay clues.
Among the remaining words, read BARE, DEAR, MOUSSE, and NEW aloud. Their animal-sounding counterparts are bear, deer, moose, and gnu. The four words left over—CARPET, DELICIOUS, MEAT, and TAPE—all follow RED.
Rank #4
This is one reasonable solving path, not necessarily the order every player will use. Connections is designed to include words that could plausibly fit more than one category, so identifying a strong group and removing it is often safer than trying to force a category from a single word.

Connections is a New York Times word game built around 16 words. The goal is to find four groups of four words that share a connection. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the most straightforward, followed by green, blue, and purple.
The game’s misdirection comes from overlapping possibilities. A word may appear to fit a category because of its meaning, spelling, sound, or use in a familiar phrase, while the intended group depends on a different interpretation. In this puzzle, DELICIOUS is a phrase-completion clue rather than a menu item, and NEW becomes an animal clue only when pronounced as GNU.
The daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s local time. Connections can be played through the NYT Games website and the Games app, along with other New York Times platforms.
