FLEETWOOD and MAC make a familiar name when paired, but the puzzle separates them. MAC belongs with APPLE, BROTHER, and DIPPER in the “BIG” group; FLEETWOOD belongs with BRISKET, FASTIDIOUS, and QUICKSAND because of its opening letters.

Difficulty and how Connections works

PC Guide reported a 2.3 out of 5 difficulty rating attributed to the NYT for this puzzle. TechRadar’s writer described it as easy and reported a perfect score; that is the writer’s personal account, not an independently reproduced result.

Answer guides describe Connections as sorting sixteen words into four groups of four based on shared themes, with up to four mistakes allowed. PC Guide also describes the colors as a relative difficulty order, from yellow (easiest) to purple (most difficult). These mechanics are reported by those guides; a direct official NYT rules page was not available to confirm them here.
