Hints for Connections #715
Try these nudges in order, stopping when you have enough to solve the board:
- Think of things a guest might find ready in a bedroom or bathroom.
- Look for words that mean very different things or point in opposite directions.
- One group consists of garments.
- For the trickiest group, change the first letter of each word to reveal a card game.
Full answers for Monday, May 26
The four categories and their tiles are:
- Items in a linen closet: PILLOWCASE, SHEET, TOWEL, WASHCLOTH
- Diametric: COUNTER, OPPOSITE, POLAR, REVERSE
- Lingerie: GARTER, HOSE, SLIP, TEDDY
- Card games with first letter changed: DIN, FRIDGE, GUMMY, JOKER
How the purple category works
Each word in the purple group becomes the name of a card game when its first letter changes: DIN becomes PIN, FRIDGE becomes BRIDGE, GUMMY becomes RUMMY, and JOKER becomes POKER. The intended connection is the resulting game names, not the original words. TechRadar’s guide also explains this letter-change pattern.
About the puzzle and replay access
Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four. The New York Times Help Center describes yellow as the easiest category and purple as the trickiest, with words that may seem to fit more than one group. The game is free to play on the platforms listed by the Help Center and releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The NYT Connections Help Center says the archive goes back to June 12, 2023, and that archive access is for All Access and Games subscribers; this May 2025 puzzle falls within that archive period.
