| Category | Words | Connection |
|---|---|---|

| Green | DIRECT, GUIDE, LEAD, SHEPHERD | Verbs meaning to steer or guide |
| Blue | CASK, FALL, MASQUE, PIT | Second words in Poe stories beginning with “The” |
| Purple | COLONY, HEARTH, LUNGE, SKINK | An organ name plus one letter |

#1 Best Overall
Blue: second words in Poe stories
The words come from “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Masque of the Red Death,” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.” In each title, the category word is the second word after “The.”
Purple: organ plus a letter
Each answer adds one letter to an organ name: COLON + Y = COLONY, HEART + H = HEARTH, LUNG + E = LUNGE, and SKIN + K = SKINK.
Suggested solving order
A useful way into the board is to spot DIRECT, GUIDE, LEAD, and SHEPHERD as a set of steering synonyms. The Poe-title connection can then organize CASK, FALL, MASQUE, and PIT. The organ transformations identify the purple group, leaving HUSKY, SOLID, SQUAT, and THICK for the stocky category. This is an explanation of the word relationships, not a report of a tested solve.
