NYT Connections #535, published Wednesday, November 27, 2024, is easier to solve once you spot its central misdirection. Start with these spoiler-safe hints, then reveal the complete groups below. The puzzle’s most useful meta-hint is “rubber baby buggy bumpers,” because each of those four words belongs to a different category.

Warning: spoilers below. If you are still working on the Wednesday, November 27, 2024, NYT Connections puzzle, number 535, use the hints first and stop before the answer section.

Hints for Connections #535

Try these from easiest to hardest:

  • Yellow: These words describe something unreliable, inconsistent, or malfunctioning.
  • Green: Four of these words can be found on a car.
  • Blue: Think about something a sitter might be hired to sit or look after.
  • Purple: Each word can follow “___” to make a type of band.

One larger hint: Think of the phrase “rubber baby buggy bumpers.” It is not one category. Instead, it is a deliberately misleading collection of words that points across several groups: RUBBER belongs with bands, BABY belongs with things a sitter watches, BUGGY describes something unreliable, and BUMPER is a car part.

Connections #535 answers

The four groups are:

  • Yellow — NOT WORKING RELIABLY: BUGGY, ERRATIC, GLITCHY, SPOTTY
  • Green — CAR PARTS: BUMPER, GRILLE, MIRROR, RIM
  • Blue — WHAT A SITTER MIGHT SIT: BABY, HOUSE, PET, PLANT
  • Purple — ___ BAND: BOY, RUBBER, TRIBUTE, WEDDING

Yellow: NOT WORKING RELIABLY

BUGGY, ERRATIC, GLITCHY, SPOTTY

All four words can describe unreliable performance. A buggy app has defects, an erratic system behaves unpredictably, a glitchy device suffers repeated faults, and spotty service works inconsistently. The misleading part is BUGGY, which can also suggest a small vehicle and therefore tempt you toward the car-parts group.

Green: CAR PARTS

BUMPER, GRILLE, MIRROR, RIM

BUMPER, GRILLE, and MIRROR are straightforward automotive parts. RIM is the less obvious entry: in this puzzle, it means the metal outer part of a wheel, not the edge of any circular object. That specificity is what makes the group work.

Blue: WHAT A SITTER MIGHT SIT

BABY, HOUSE, PET, PLANT

This group uses “sit” as a shortened form of providing care or supervision. A babysitter looks after a BABY, a house sitter watches a HOUSE, a pet sitter cares for a PET, and a plant sitter takes care of a PLANT while its owner is away.

The wording is intentionally elliptical. These are not four things that one conventional kind of sitter literally sits on; they are four things that different kinds of sitters may be hired to watch.

Purple: ___ BAND

BOY, RUBBER, TRIBUTE, WEDDING

Add BAND to each word to form a familiar phrase: boy band, rubber band, tribute band, and wedding band.

RUBBER is the trap. It may initially feel related to BUMPER and RIM because of tires and cars, while BOY, TRIBUTE, and WEDDING can all evoke music or performance. The category is based on completing the phrase “___ band,” not on the words describing one kind of band.

Why this puzzle was tricky

Connections #535 is built around overlapping associations rather than obscure vocabulary. The phrase “rubber baby buggy bumpers” makes the interference especially strong:

  • RUBBER belongs to the Purple “___ BAND” group.
  • BABY belongs to the Blue sitter group.
  • BUGGY belongs to the Yellow unreliable-performance group.
  • BUMPER belongs to the Green car-parts group.

There are also several words with plausible secondary meanings. BUGGY can mean a vehicle, RIM can mean the edge of almost anything circular, and SPOTTY can refer to visible marks rather than inconsistent performance. The intended groups become clear when you favor the most specific complete set of four over a tempting partial connection.

A practical solving route

  1. Start with ERRATIC, GLITCHY, and SPOTTY. Their shared meaning is strong, and BUGGY completes the “not working reliably” group.
  2. Next, take BUMPER, GRILLE, and MIRROR. Once those three are visible, interpret RIM specifically as a wheel rim.
  3. Look at the caretaker construction: BABY, HOUSE, PET, and PLANT can all follow the idea of “sitter.”
  4. The four remaining words—BOY, RUBBER, TRIBUTE, and WEDDING—all complete “band.”

What is the “rubber baby buggy bumpers” hint?

The phrase is “rubber baby buggy bumpers.” In the puzzle, RUBBER is a Purple answer, BABY is Blue, BUGGY is Yellow, and BUMPER is Green. The phrase creates a tempting but incorrect cross-category association.

The Bottom Line

The key to Connections #535 is separating the phrase-level trap from the intended meanings: BUGGY, ERRATIC, GLITCHY, and SPOTTY are unreliable; BUMPER, GRILLE, MIRROR, and RIM are car parts; BABY, HOUSE, PET, and PLANT are things a sitter may watch; and BOY, RUBBER, TRIBUTE, and WEDDING complete “band.”
