Spoiler-light hints for Connections #720
These clues are paraphrased from Parade’s May 31 guide; they are hints, not verified wording from the game board.
- A small space set back from the main area, sometimes hidden from view.
- Physical awards or symbols.
- Part of the bread-baking process.
- Something involving lips and breath; one answer also appears in a figurative expression.
Forbes offers a shorter second layer of prompts: “Hide and seek,” “A real winner,” “Sandwiches ahead,” and “Babies love one.”

How the puzzle’s connections work
Small, set-back spaces
CAVITY, HOLLOW, NOOK, and RECESS can each describe a small or indented space. The category label is ALCOVE.
Recognition for achievement
CERTIFICATE, MEDAL, PLAQUE, and TROPHY are physical awards or tokens of recognition.
Breadmaking verbs
FERMENT, PROOF, REST, and RISE refer to stages or actions in breadmaking. Here, PROOF is used as a verb: dough is left to proof.
Things you can blow
You can blow a BUBBLE, a FUSE, a KISS, or a RASPBERRY. The words connect through different senses of “blow,” rather than through one shared physical action.

How Connections is played
Forbes describes Connections as a board of 16 words to sort into four groups of four, with a limited number of attempts and color-coded difficulty tiers. Paul Tassi, Forbes Senior Contributor, summarizes the aim as: “The goal is to take a group of 16 words and find links between four pairs of four of them.” That is a general description of the game, not a claim about this puzzle’s construction or difficulty.
Parade’s May 31, 2025 guide and Forbes’ May 30 guide for the Saturday puzzle independently report the same answer set. The historical NYT game board was not directly verified, so these answers are corroborated by those two published guides.
