Why the groups fit
- POT, SEED, SOIL, WATER: These are things used to grow a houseplant.
- FLOOR, ROCK, SHAKE, SHOCK: Each can convey or cause astonishment, as in “floor someone,” “rock someone,” “shake someone,” or “shock someone.”
- CHERISH, FROZEN, HOLIDAY, MUSIC: Each is a Madonna song title.
- BUMPER, CLOWN, GETAWAY, SPORTS: Each completes a familiar phrase ending in “car.”
How to approach the overlapping words
Some tiles can suggest more than one association, so a plausible pair is not necessarily a complete category. Check whether a potential group has a consistent relationship across all four words before committing. In his account of solving this board, Forbes contributor Erik Kain says he found the houseplant set first, then the car phrases, and later recognized the astonishment group; the Madonna songs were left by elimination. That is his reported solving order, not a required sequence.

Why “today” depends on your time zone
The NYT Help Center says the daily Connections game is released at midnight in the player’s time zone. That means people in different locations may see different daily puzzles at the same moment. This guide uses the full historical date—October 5, 2025—and identifies the puzzle as #847.

The NYT Help Center describes the daily game as free to play through NYT Games and other listed NYT platforms. It says archived puzzles are available to All Access and Games subscribers, with the archive reaching back to June 12, 2023. Archive play affects some statistics but not streaks.
