Spoilers: The reviewed date-specific guides identify Thursday, March 5, 2026, as NYT Connections puzzle #998. The groups are hardware items, idea-development places, words meaning “go back and forth,” and meanings of “sub.”

Hints for Connections #998

Use these clues if you want to solve the board before seeing the full groups:

  • One group contains pieces you might use when building a cabinet.
  • Another names places or tools where an idea can be explored before it is ready for prime time.
  • A third group consists of verbs associated with changing between options or states.
  • The final group contains four possible meanings or referents of “sub.”

Answers for Thursday, March 5

The date-specific guides from Parade and Lifehacker, republished by Yahoo, give the same four categories and word sets:

Color Category Words
Yellow Bits of hardware BOLT, NUT, SCREW, WASHER
Green Places where ideas are developed INCUBATOR, LAB, SANDBOX, TEST BED
Blue Go back and forth ALTERNATE, SEESAW, SWITCH, TOGGLE
Purple What “sub” might refer to BELOW, HERO, REPLACEMENT, SUBMARINE

Why ALTERNATE can be misleading

ALTERNATE may seem to fit with REPLACEMENT, since “alternate” can be used as a noun in other contexts. In this puzzle, however, it works as a verb: to alternate is to switch back and forth. That makes it part of the blue group, alongside SEESAW, SWITCH, and TOGGLE.

How the groups connect

  • Yellow: A bolt, nut, screw, and washer are all hardware items.
  • Green: An incubator, lab, sandbox, and test bed are settings or environments for developing and trying ideas.
  • Blue: Alternate, seesaw, switch, and toggle express changing back and forth.
  • Purple: “Sub” can point to something below, a submarine, a hero sandwich, or a replacement.

The answers and puzzle number are reported consistently by the two date-specific guides linked above. A primary NYT archive confirmation was not established in the reviewed sources.
