The Wednesday, June 4, 2025, New York Times Connections puzzle was game #724. Below are spoiler-safe clues first, followed by the category answers and all 16 word placements. Stop before the spoiler section if you are still solving.

Spoiler-free hints for Connections #724

The word bank contains four groups of four. These nudges identify the ideas without listing the category names or revealing every answer.

  • Yellow: Think of the building blocks that can appear in a song, including a memorable repeated part.
  • Green: These are ways an audience can show enthusiastic support out loud or with a gesture.
  • Blue: Picture the furniture and floor covering you might find just inside a home’s front door.
  • Purple: Consider recurring visual motifs associated with a famous Surrealist painter.

The 16 words

PIPE, HOOK, ROOT, APPLE, CHEER, CONSOLE, CLOUD, BRIDGE, RUNNER, BOWLER, REFRAIN, WHISTLE, BENCH, CHORUS, CLAP, COAT RACK.

Spoiler: the Connections answers for June 4, 2025

Here is the complete solution for game #724.

Color Category Words
Yellow Parts of a song BRIDGE, CHORUS, HOOK, REFRAIN
Green Support audibly CHEER, CLAP, ROOT, WHISTLE
Blue Things in an entryway BENCH, COAT RACK, CONSOLE, RUNNER
Purple Imagery in Magritte paintings APPLE, BOWLER, CLOUD, PIPE

Why this puzzle was tricky

CONSOLE creates a tempting false group

CONSOLE can mean to comfort someone, so it may seem related to emotional support alongside CHEER, ROOT and CLAP. In this puzzle, however, CONSOLE is an entryway table. The furniture interpretation is confirmed by BENCH, COAT RACK and RUNNER.

The purple category depends on René Magritte

APPLE, BOWLER, CLOUD and PIPE are recognizable images associated with paintings by René Magritte. The pipe recalls The Treachery of Images, while bowler hats, apples and clouds recur throughout his Surrealist work. This is the puzzle’s most specialized connection and its hardest color tier.

Song terminology overlaps in ordinary speech

BRIDGE, CHORUS, HOOK and REFRAIN are all parts of song structure or songwriting vocabulary. Their related meanings make the yellow group solvable once the other overlapping possibilities are removed.

How the daily game works

The New York Times Help Center says players receive 16 words and must find four groups of four sharing a connection. Each group is assigned a difficulty color: yellow is the easiest and purple the most difficult. The Help Center also explains that “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.”

Connections releases at midnight in the player’s local time, so the date can differ by timezone. The game is available through the NYT Games website and app, nytimes.com/theathletic and the NYT News app; NYT’s help information says it is currently free on those platforms, with an account recommended for carrying progress between devices.
